Acetaminophen liver warning

Analog

Lifer
NEW YORK (AP) ? A Food and Drug Administration report released Wednesday recommends stronger warnings and dose limits on drugs containing the painkiller acetaminophen, citing an increased risk of liver injury.

The recommendation covers both prescription doses and over-the-counter medication, of which Johnson & Johnson's Tylenol is the most well-known. Acetaminophen is also widely available as a generic over-the-counter drug.

"There is extensive evidence that hepatotoxicity (liver toxicity) caused by acetaminophen use may result from lack of consumer awareness that acetaminophen can cause severe liver injury," the working group report said.

The outside advisers will meet in June to discuss the report's findings. The recommendations include enhanced public information efforts, stronger labels warning of liver side effects, and dose limitations.

"Consumers may not be aware that acetaminophen is present in many over-the-counter combination products, so they may unknowingly exceed the recommended acetaminophen dose if they take more than one acetaminophen product without knowing that both contain acetaminophen," the report said.

The recommendations also call for limiting the maximum adult daily dose to no more than 3,250 milligrams. The current recommendation stands at 4,000 milligrams per day. Other recommendations include limiting tablet strength for immediate release formulations and limiting options in liquid formulations for children.

Its been known to people that know anything about the Meds they take. But most don;t, let alone even read the label.

Just like NSAIDs cause heart problem in high dose.
Most just have a pain so they keep swallowing pills till it stops hurting.

That and most of the the time the amount of drug in 1 pill is enough to do the job, but 1 pill each time does not sale as many so the drug makers sell it as take 2 instead.

So instead of taking two pills, people will take three. Duh.

I have seen many take 4-5 at a time as "my head really hurts..."

I tried to tell someone about the sideeffects and just got a " but I only take them maybe 2-3 times a week, not everyday..." 😕

its the same risk that has always bene known...
its just the government agencies are now trying to pad all the walls and floors.

A lot of the liver damage with acetaminophen is from people that mix it with alcohol.

I knew a guy who was quite young (early 30s) who died from this. He was an idiot but left 3 kids and a widow who is an insufficient mother 🙁

I like the drug commercials that go on for a minute or more listing all the possible side effects. Happy music and a soothing voice while we're being told that in some cases, taking it may cause death.

meh .. ibuprofin FTW. it's the only one that works for me.

Ibuprofin is said to be harmful to your stomach in large quantities (damages the lining, ulcers, etc). So, you have to be careful with whatever medications you use. Liver damage > Stomach lining in the grand scheme of things, but, again, boils down to using medications as directed.

What's the average dose people take?

I take 1 500mg tylenol or 2 325mg tylenol every 4-6 hours or 1 200mg Ibuprofen for pain.

In movies and tv shows I always see people dump a random handful into their mouths - maybe that's where idiots are getting fucked up.

Ibuprofin = NSAID which = Heart damage

Which is only a significant risk if you have a pre-existing heart condition or other abnormal risk factors for a heart condition.

As for me, I'll stick with Naproxen Sodium (Aleve) when my back goes out. Once a year with a 600mg starting dose and a 400mg maintenance every 24 hours for the next 1-2 days isn't going to kill me and it's a hell of a lot better than being flat on my back on the floor the whole time.

It's nice that 200mg of ibuprofen does something for you, if I'm at a point where taking something feels necessary, it's 800mg or there's no point.
Tylenol does nothing for me.

Actually some studys show people that use high doses of NSAIDs (over 1000mg - Ibuprofin) can get heart damage even when they had no previous issue.

But like all things dosage and mixing of other drugs/meds is key as well.

True... I just think people expect too much out of life. Feeling down? take a pill. Back hurts a little? take this. A little pudgy? try these pills...

Sometimes you just have to live with what your dealt. Taking pills to mask symptoms doesn't help over the long term.
