Acer computers?

has anyone heard of these? people in the united kingdom have hardly heard of these, and i was wondering how many people don't know about this company. is it a good company, and what would you say are there strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, compared to other PC vendors, such as Dell, HP, and others.

(note: this is not a parody thread, i am asking genuinenly 😉)

My friend bought an Acer notebook from Newegg and he's had no problems with it. Says the battery life is alright and it runs great.

Well, I bought an Acer DVD drive years ago that has been awesome. I don't know if I'd buy a prebuilt computer from them but I don't have any beef with the company as a whole.

Acer has been around for awhile but never had a stellar reputation. I've never personally dealt with any of their products so I cannot vouch for this one way or the other. If there are other more renowned companies for you to choose from such as Dell, I would.

so i'm guessing an e-machine is utter crap, according to you people?

btw, i heard they do manufacturing on their assembly lines for other pc vendors such as HP and IBM (though the names of the vendors may be wrong, i do know that they do do manufacturing for other pc vendors)

Again, I have not owned an e-machine (I build my own computers) so I cannot speak for them but according to what I've read they have supposedly gotten a better reputation these last few years.

You might mention which particular product line interests you. Acer lines run quite the IT gamut, and quality can vary from line to line (as with many manufacturers, of course).

i am personally using an Acer laptop right now, but i was at college today, and i was talking to my mates about computers, and they had never heard of the brand.

Rather than listening to much of the misinformation in this thread, would suggest reading here instead, as many who have actual experience with Acer machines report there.

Either search for the specific model, or check under the "Other System Discussions".

Good luck.

Well, i was only asking a general opinion on what people thought about the manufacturer in general, not a very highly technical view on it, that is why i decided to ask here 😀

i went on to the forums of notebookforums, and i searched for the model that i have, and they said this about it:

The battery occupies the whole front lower half and the unit comes with a filler. This will lighten the load for those not wanting a battery

i did not want to sign up on their forums just to ask a single question, so i was wondering if someone here could answer it for me:

what is the point of a batter filler?

if you want to see what i am talking about, the exact laptop i have is here

For everyone bashing Acer, weren't they the ones behind all the Aopen motherboards that were so popular a few years back? And yes, I do believe they're affiliated with BenQ as well.

Someone posted here a while back about winning an Acer Ferarri laptop at an E-Con. I wonder if he sold it or kept it...

My GF has a centrino based Acer lappy and it's excellent. 6 hours battery in real usage. Whips my '1 hour if you're lucky' P4 lappy :|
