Acer buying Gateway

Wow how the tides turn in the PC business. I remember when Gateway was considered one of the best and Acer was considered not so great.

I remembered the same. Gateway in the 90s produced some of the best tower case in the business. Those were built like tanks: big and sturdy. The construction was unmatched. They don't build them like they use to.

I think they should revert to the "Gateway 2000" moniker 'cause it sounds all cool and futuristic.

Anyway, it's nice that all the turd brands are going to be rolled into one super turd.

I  Acer too.

<--posting from TM4400 😀

Too bad they don't have anything competitive with the likes of an HP dv9500 or a Sager 5790. I definitely wouldn't mind another Acer. Unfortunately, none of their "top tier" laptops have a decent GPU.

Sad to see Gateway go; I too remember their tank-like cases of yore. Here's to a bigger and better Acer!

yep I remember when gateway was the big, my first pc was a gateway, p1 166mmx, I really thought I had something, it was a good pc

micron pc were big too for a while

what was the name of that other pc company? they had about 10 percent of the market, then gone about 5 years ago

Packard Bell?

While Acer is not that big in the United States, their global sales are right up there with the big boys. Especially Asia and South America. My guess is that it is easier to buy a well-known brand as opposed to spending years of time and millions of dollars building up the Acer name in America.

Wow - Youtube and Myspace sell for billions, and Gateway goes for $710 million... that's sad.

I have an Acer that I use as a HTPC. I've been very happy with it so far. I have an eMachines too (Gateway owns them, right?), but I haven't used it much yet.
