Acer Aspire Switch

I just picked up the Acer Aspire Switch 10. A budget 2-in-1 hybrid similar to the ASUS T100. It's a tablet that comes with a clamshell keyboard and priced starting at $380.

10.1 inch 1366.768 IPS display
Intel Atom Z3745 process
2GB RAM
32 or 64GB eMMC
micro SD, micro USB, micro HDMI, separate charging port
1.3 pound tablet, 2.6 pounds with keyboard

I had an ASUS T100 and that will be the main rival it gets compared with. And now I just got home from Best Buy with my 32GB Acer Aspire Switch 10 and after a few hours of use, I think Acer did the better job this time. Here are my first impressions...

Build quality.
The back has an aluminum feel, some have reported it as being aluminum, but I'm pretty sure it's just plastic. Either way, Acer did a pretty good job, it doesn't feel cheap, has a brushed criss-cross pattern on the back, holds firmly in the hand and doesn't leave fingerprints. It has a solid feel without any creaking or flexing.

This is in stark contrast to the T100 that is glossy plastic, feels very cheap and slippery and is a fingerprint magnet. This was one of my big turn offs regarding the T100, it felt grimey rather quickly And the T100 also flexed and creaked quite a bit.

Display.
It's only 1366x768. I know some will gripe about it not being full HD, but at this price I'd rather have a good quality 768p display than what would probably be a poor quality 1080p display. And so far this does seem like a nice display, it doesn't look washed out, it's IPS and has great viewing angles. I'm typing on it outdoors and it gets very bright.

This seems to be easily twice as bright as the ASUS T100.

Keyboard.
The keyboard feels nice, I'm typing out this entire first impressions post using it. I've had bad experiences with keyboards such as the one on the $500 Yoga 2 11. But no complaints about the keyboard so far. It's a 10 inch keyboard, so I do have occasional issues where I reach for a number key and go too far and hit a function key instead.

Also having a problem with the trackpad. It's a nice sized trackpad and it functions great, but I'm constantly brushing it while typing and having the mouse shoot off somewhere. So I have to toggle it off (Fn-F7) before typing any long posts. I normally don't have this many problems, so not sure if it's the large size of the track pad or it's just terrible at ignoring accidental contact like some trackpads can, I suspect both.

I really didn't have much complaints about the ASUS T100 keyboard itself, but I did have a problem where because it was sunk rather low from the palm rest, if I was leaned back and typing I would often hit the edge of the palm rest with my thumb when I tried to use the spacebar. The Acer keyboard is sunken a little, but doesn't seem to be as much and I haven't had the same problem with it. I did have far fewer accidental trackpad issues with the ASUS T100's smaller trackpad.

Usage Modes.
The Acer supports more than just tablet and laptop modes. I can dock the tablet backwards to use it in presentation and tent modes as well.

In laptop mode I can tilt the screen way back. It isn't balanced when the screen is tilted all the way back and will fall backwards. But I love that I have the option to go that far back. Some tablets have limited angles because they are top heavy. I can't remember how far back the ASUS T100 went, definitely not this far, but I think it did okay.

Speakers.
The speakers are in front of the tablet. The tablet is a bit taller in landscape mode because they have the speakers at the bottom. And these speakers sound surprisingly good.

ASUS put the speakers on the back of the T100. I can't remember how they sounded.

Closing thoughts.
I'm not really a Acer fan. I usually find their tablet designs bulky and ugly looking. Wasn't fond of the Acer S7 ultrabook either. But so far Acer has impressed me with the budget 2-in-1. It's better than the ASUS T100 in almost every way and only costs $30 more. Anyone looking for a cheap 10 inch Windows 8 tablet, netbook, or hybrid, this seems like the thing to get.

One more thing... Battery.
I haven't used it long enough to judge the battery life, but wanted to add what another reviewer said. It's rated for 8 hours, but he got about 7 hours on his video loop test. The same test the ASUS T100 got 9.5 hours. He says the Acer has a 6000 mAh battery while the ASUS has a 8000 mAh battery. So this seems to be one area the ASUS does win at. But I think 7 hours should be sufficient for me.

And here is a video review comparing the Acer and ASUS 2-in-1s.

An update on the Acer Switch after a few days...

I noticed a problem on the display unit at Best Buy. The Windows button didn't work and when I pressed the volume up button the Windows Narrator would turn on, volume down didn't work either. I didn't think too much, thought someone was messed around with it.

With my unit I first noticed the Windows button would sometimes stop working. Usually it was brief, it would start working again in a few seconds to minutes or rebooting the tablet would fix it. And today when I tried to use my volume buttons, neither worked, the Narrator would toggle on and off when pressing volume up and the screen would dim when I pushed volume down. Also the Windows button is not working again. I rebooted and the same thing with the Windows button still not working.

I Googled this issue and found a thread about Acer W700 owners having the same problem and it turned out that if you hold the Windows button and press Volume up, that toggles the Narrator in Ease of Access. I suspect my Windows button (which is capacitive) is "stuck" in some way, so when I try to use the volume keys it thinks I'm trying to use the ease of access shortcut to turn on Narrator. Unfortunately after turning off that Win+Vol Up option for Narrator, the volume keys still don't work, but at least it isn't turning the Narrator on and off.

I find it concerning that the Window button apparently has failed on both the Best Buy demo unit and my own tablet.

good enough for 1080p MKV files, outputting to tv via hdmi?
also, if standing 6ft away, how well can you hear the sound on max volume?

After more research into the issue, some people suggested the Acer Quick Action software might be the problem. I removed it and the Windows and Volume buttons are working again. I removed all the Acer bloatware except the Live Update (for drivers). Hopefully that'll fix things. That Quick Action app just provided a few feature toggles like Wifi, Bluetooth, and something they call LucidView that supposedly makes the colors more vibrant but I never noticed a difference with it on or off. So removing that was no loss at all.

I just copied over a 1080p Anime fansub MKV with subtitles (I always have the hardest time playing Anime MKV files). It's playing very smoothly on the 1080p TV I have connected with the micro HDMI to HDMI cable with sound coming through the TV fine.

Regarding it's own speakers. They are loud and easily hearable from 6 feet away. And I don't hear any weird distortions at max volume. I'm quite impressed with the speakers.

Capacitive windows button on my switch also doesn't work. Bought it from Best Buy on the 5th.

Also, microsoft store is selling this for 349 usd (as opposed to 379 at best buy).

Maybe it's best to just return it for cash back seeing as I'm still within 15 days...

Also, removing acer quick launch did not fix the issue for me.

Edit:
Looks like I needed a cold reboot...
Will continue testing. Hopefully this doesn't persist.

My button issue came up again, so Yongde is right, removing the Acer software didn't really help. It was probably the cold boot I did after. I just did another cold boot (regular restart won't help) and by buttons are working again.

This is a shame, aside from this rather big problem it's a decent tablet.

Ahh, thanks, that was my post concerning the regularly stuck Windows button on my W700:

Holding the Windows button down in combination with

+ Volume up = enter/exit Narrator
+ Volume down = Print Screen
+ Power = Ctrl-Alt-Delete and the new Metro style full screen menu to Lock/Switch User/Log Out/Task Manager

From when I first got the system I often get the same behaviour after opening up the system from the folio case and face a stuck Windows key. It's resolved by pressing the windows key to loosen it.
Thanks for your review with the Switch. Along with the W700, I've also got Switch 10's predecessor, the W510 (Windows 8 launch Clover Trail).

It's unfortunate with Acer.... They can often have quite great concepts, but on execution the odd corner is cut returning hardware flaws to save costs:

  • The W510 had an infamous manufacturing flaw of a shorted out touchpad resulting in jerky/jumpy mouse movements... Repair depots were to replace/fix the docking keyboard.
  • The W700 has LCD screen ghosting when the brightness is high, a manufacturing flaw of some units with loose WiFi antenna leads resulting in weak and intermittent reception, and then the Windows button getting stuck in depressed.... I'm unlucky to have a unit with all three issues, but knew the risk when heading in, all the while content to fix (opened the unit to secure the WiFi antennas) or work around the issues to get an extremely CHEAP i5 system that was sold new for C$529.

Yeah, I saw your thread and went, "OMG that is exactly it!". And I couldn't believe that this new tablet seems to be experiencing the same defect as a tablet they made two and a half years ago. I would have thought they would have learned from whatever design mistake causes this issue.

Hi all,
i also bougt an Acer Switch 10 64 gb, and i had the same problem: windows capacitive button stoped working, and the volume up iniciates the narrator. The only resolution that i found is to shut down it. And when i turn on again from scratch, everything will work again. This makes me think the problem is in the software. From my experience, windows allways had a lot of small problems like these ones, when resuming from suspended and hibernated states or with fast boot, and usually just solved with a complete shut down. If you get news of some update that solve this problem, please post.

Best Regards to all ladies and gents,
Francisco

How have you all been getting on with the Switch 10 in the last month and a half?

Has the Windows/Volume button issue been resolved with an update?

How are you finding the battery life in comparison with the T100? From what I've read in reviews, it seems to me that battery life is the main weakness, but would like to hear from those who have used the device for longer than reviewers.
