Acer 24 inch widescreen LCD: $279.99 at Office Depot (starts Sunday)

Office Depot has posted their upcoming weekly circular, and one of the items listed is the Acer 24 inch LCD (model # X243Wbd) for $279.99.

Seems like a very competitive price, with perhaps better quality control than the Soyo that has been on sale for around $300 now and then.

Go to OfficeDepot.com, click on weekly ads, and see page 6:

This is a TN panel right? While the Soyo is an MVA/PVA?

I think rather than these monitors being lucky sales, it's a sign of 24" monitors starting to come to mainstream price points. $250 and an HDMI port and I'm all over one.

Best bet is to go check it out for yourself. Best Buy was selling the Acer x241wsd for under $300 last month, and I believe most of them turned out to be S-PVA panels (they were definitely not TN). Someone did end up opening up their monitor to confirm it, as everyone suspected it was the case despite the printed specs on the box matching those of a TN panel. Note that the same model being sold at other stores (as well as a few being sold by BB) were actually TN panels.

Why? HDMI is just DVI with audio support and YPrPb color space. If the monitor doesn't have speakers, there's no reason to have an HDMI port (beyond PCB space savings, which isn't applicable on a large display)

HDMI-DVI cables cost about as much as DVI-DVI or HDMI-HDMI cables, because it's just a physical connector change.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the significance of TN and MVA/PVA? I have the Soyo and think it is great. Is one panel superior to the other?

I have both the SOYO and the Acer. For what it's worth, I find the SOYO much more pleasant than the Acer.

Heh, despite being a digital world now, many people are stuck in analog still. People still can't grasp the concept of digital = digital = digital. All 1's and 0's. You either get the signal or you don't. I had a friend recently purchase a TV with a "120mhz" refresh rate and was conned into buying a $120, 6', Monster Brand, HDMI cable. I tried telling him that he was paying to much, but he preferred to go with the salesman's rhetoric instead of me. I just told him he needed a HDMI cable that was capable of 5Gb transfer rates which is the HDMI 1.3 standard and his "120mhz" refresh TV wouldn't know the difference.

As stated, there is no need for an HDMI cable for a computer monitor unless that monitor has speakers built in. Then, if you actually plan on using monitor speakers, you might have a need for an HDMI input. Otherwise, it's just another useless addon for a monitor that serves no real purpose to the end user except to jack up the price of the monitor and possibly con more people into buying ridiculously priced HDMI cables.

rofl...

i'll pay my $5.81 for my HDMI 10ft cable from monoprice quite happily. $120 for a cable... people who sell those should be slapped.

Well by having HDMI i was hoping I could connect game consoles or dvd players while keeping the computer connected through DVI. Maybe I should have also said put on an audio out jack.

Yeah, I saw this deal yesterday when putting out the tags (OD employee). We only had one new Acer in stock though. And one problem is, the one on display is hooked up to a VGA distributor and is not running on native res. So thats two strikes against its setup. Folks come in an see it and go "Meh" then they see the HP 2408 hooked up at native res and they go "wow'. Granted the HP does have that nice gloss to it.

just drove over to the OD by my house. went directly to the monitors and there was ONE ticket left for the acer. got all excited... wasn't impressed by the screensaver... but like the above poster mentioned. it's obvious when looking at them that they're not running at native resolutions.

get to the front and i'm told that sale ticket is for the display model. the manager offers to check to see if there's any at the warehouse. apparently there's 299 of them sitting at the warehouse. so she gave me a raincheck and said she'd call me if any come in on the truck tomorrow.

i <3 the iowa city OD

also: that 24" glossy HP DOES look sick. i really wanted to hold out for a glossy lcd... but... i came within seconds of buying that 22" non-glossy LG that best buy has had on sale the past few weeks. so to get a 24" for essentially the same price as that... with no rebate or anything. it's too hard to pass up.

So how would this monitor compare to an older Dell 20" widescreen (2005fpw)? I just built a new desktop with Vista Ultimate and I've always wanted a dual monitor setup. As the Acer would be my primary monitor because it's bigger, I wouldn't want the quality to be noticeable lower.

Thanks!
Pete

I can definitely say that the monitors at OD look like crap. When I was in the market for a 24 I went to Best Buy and OD and there was no comparison. The monitors at best buy all looked better than those at OD. The OD ones were hooked up to a dvd player that went into a composite to vga splitter. So they take a crappy sd resolution dvd and split it into 8 separate signals. They just look terrible and the worst looking one of all was the Soyo 24. You simply cant stretch that standard def signal that far without it looking like complete crap.

The HP and Gateway 24" monitors looked positively stunning in comparison. I bought the HP on sale but if they'd gotten that soyo to dsiplay a decent signal it might have swayed me away from the glossy goodness of the HP.

It showed OOS for every store around me but it let me place a backorder, seemed like it let me have it at $279.99.

I just bought this LCD form Micro Center Saturday, they won't pricematch it because it's below their cost. Losers.

So those that have gotten this monitor, what are your opinions? How does it compare to the Soyo that has been around this price?

so i picked up mine tonight... and it's pretty amazing so far. it's really bright at first... but it's pretty easy to adjust down to something reasonable.

so i don't own... nor have i ever seen in person... the soyo lcd. but i DO know that lcd has like a 1 year warranty on it. wheras the acer has a 3 year parts/labor/backlight warranty. i thought that was pretty sweet.

I checked the status of my backorder today and it says 'cancelled - inventory reasons'. Looks like I wont' be getting mine.

Sadly there are none available around Boston, there is however a Microcenter that has Q6600's and E8400's $199. I would be more than happy to ship you some of those if you could get me 2 of these monitors (I would obviously pay the difference in price and freight). What do you say?

I had the Acer 24 for a couple of days and then tried the LG 22 followed by the Soyo 24. I adjusted all three of them for best color, etc. In my opinion the Soyo was by far the best and is the one I purchased.
