I wouldn't say 99%ile is easy to hit....it's a ranking....but still I hit it and scored every close to perfect.

At the time I was graduating I got offered pretty decent bonuses....however if I signed up more than likely I'd have been in desert storm.

You'd be surprised. Ask any of the 11 bravos... (At MEPS I saw a guy who got a 14 on the AFQT)

Here's a sample question that I had no idea about: which part of the engine allows wheels to have different rotation speed (for turning)?

In vehicle terms thats a differential and not part of the engine, although part of the drivetrain.

Eh. I got 99s across the board on the ASVAB. It's pretty easy.

Edit: Errr, nevermind. My AFQT was 99.

Yup I aced it back in '81 had every recruiter calling me constantly for YEARS after the fact.

Yeah, same story here. I took the test back in '95 in order to get out of a couple of classes, and scored high 80's and 90's in all of the categories. After that, the recruiters for every branch of the service but the Coast Guard harassed me for next 5 years :)

I gotta admit, though, the Navy nuke program sounded kinda cool!

OK, I just dug out my old Ed Center record and here are my scores. The date is sometime during August of 1980. I had been out of college (read: flunked freshman year at Kentucky) for 4 months at the time of exam. Talk about another trip down memory lane.

GT: 130 GM: 135 EL: 131 CL: 125 MM: 141 SC: 135 CO: 135 FA: 140 OF: 136 ST: 135

I knew a couple of guys with 140-150 GT scores back then. The test changes every couple of years. The series/version I took was 4B. When I recruited for active Army, we tested on 13, 14, 15 and 16 series. Series 14 was the HS exam.

125-130 is still the magic number, I guess.

Those aren't the raw scores I'm talking about. Those are Army composite scores. What are the real raw scores. They are on the worksheet you are given after you complete the test. Ask your recruiter if you weren't given the results.
I know what raw scores you are referring to but can't quite remember the names at this moment. There are 4 different scores for the raw ones and this is how the AFQT is determined.

When I recruited, we'd call the testing center immediately after the test for the raw scores. We'd then look in a book to get the QT score. If the QT was above 31, we'd put them in boots. I never recruited a 'Cat 4' or someone with a QT between 21-30. However, my station commander always insisted I did because I reenlisted. ;)

Anyway, I had a 94 AFQT score.

me and my bro both got 99's on the Asvab, i was hungover as hell when i took mine, and my bro is a frikkin idiot.

I think the Avg Anandtecher would easily be in the high 90's

Its really just a screening process to keep the really dumb guys out of the military, i think 40th percentile is the avg minimum for most services, and some guys have to take it like 3 or 4 times to pass, now thats scary.

But dont think cuz im smart that im a wuss, I also scored the highest rating in my whole company (150+ dudes) on the Physical fitness test. And im also rated expert (highest) in both the Rifle and Pistol. Now im just waiting my turn to go to Iraq :D

I remember when we were at MEPS and had to get our physicals done. There were a bunch of guys sitting on that damn vinyl couch in their underwear waiting to go into the doctor's office to get checked for piles, the procedure being to go in, drop your shorts, and spread your cheeks while they shined a flashlight on you to check. Well, the door to the doctor's office was one of those heavy firedoors, but it cleared the tile floor by about three centimeters so we could hear what was going on inside. We heard the doc tell one guy to drop his shorts, turn around and spread his cheeks, then a couple of seconds later we heard this fart that damn near shook the door off its hinges. When we got done laughing, the doctor was STILL swearing. :D

I said this because people just assume if you go 11B, you are stupid and that's all you can do. I think it takes some pretty big balls to be the infantry.

I gave 8 years to my country. You don't need to worry about my intestinal fortitude.

Heh.. I've got nothing whatsoever against those 11B guys... There are a lot of good people who go into that.

I originally went 11 bang-bang for the bonus, education kicker, hoo-aah - hoo-aah headbanging and jump school. Reclassed 2x later on. I had to reclass a second time because the first MOS that I reclassed into disappeared after serving in it for two years.

Yes, there are many very intelligent people serving as grunts. 11 series teaches more about life and an appreciation thereof than any other MOS, in my opinion.

don't give up so easily. the type of degree you got makes a big difference here. granted, they are heavily reducing class size at OTS and the boards are more competitive now, but the Air Force uses a "Whole Person" concept, and that isn't a bunch of political BS. Ask me how I know. If you have any kind of engineering degree, then you're a fool for not trying. Computer Science is more competitive, Political Science...good luck with that. Have you talked with an Officer Accessions recruiter?

also, your scores can't be "2-3x higher than the average officer" since the AFOQT is also on a percentage system. i.e., you can't score a 150...

Congrats on your ASVB scores. I was looking into Air Force OTS, however after talking with a recruiter and a bunch of other goodies, the Air Force is mega pickey and anal aobut whom they are selecting for officers. Unless you are ROTC, Academy, or an engineer (mechanical, aerospace type) your chances are about nil. Not saying impossible, but just mega competitative.
So for myself, I am thinking Army OCS now, but even they may just have one board for college ops next fiscal year.

Anhow, after reading up about the Army and talking to my current army buddies, it seems as if the brightest and the um, slowest people opt for infantry; the opposites on the IQ scale.

Once again, everyone in ATOT is in the top 1% of whatever, and yet only one or two have actually served.

I actually scored fairly well on whatever tests they gave in 1965 (before computers were invented) and that alowed me to train and serve as a 91P20 (X-Ray Tech) during 'Nam.

The ASVAB was probably the most entertaining test I took during high school. Took it my sophomore year in high school, scored within the 99th percentile as well. Good times. I got a phone call from every service at least once a month for awhile. I'm now a freshmen in college and haven't really had any recruiters call me since the end of last year. I had really considered the Air Force ROTC, I was just too worried about certain things.. ie the fact that I'm premed and looking forward to a career in medicine and there was no way to promise myself an extension on the mandatory 4 years of active duty after undergrad is completed. There's no way I could do 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of active, and then go to med school.. would be impossible. MCAT scores would be void by that point. Ick. Too bad tho, I would have really liked that.
