aced interview... but one tricky question.

Well I had my interview today at a new company to support Olympus Digital Cameras.

The one tricky question asked me to name three ways to install software. The two obvious are from the internet and from a CD or other removable media... can you name the third way? Would you have remembered?

From a network drive? I dunno, I always feel cornered and can't think worth a crap when they spring stuff like that on me.

network...? (e.g. LAN)

there's a few different ways... depending on which inputs you have a vailable...

serial port
parallel port
usb port
infared port

LAN connection..

any method that involves sending data to the computer...

floppy

Edit: well apparently it's the same as CD since it's one of 'any kind of removable media'

so then i'll guess through network, either wired or wireless.

Yep bingo!

It wasn't THAT hard, but tricky. It's one of those questions you obviously know, but you wouldn't think of. I asked a friend at my job that is cisco certified or whatever and he didn't think of it until i told him.

Windows Plug and Play! 😀

I didn't know you could plug in a piece of software 😕

I thought it would install the necessary software from Window's CAD files.

I believe plug and play refers only to drivers/hardware devices. However, CAD files is a valid answer to the question posed.

that is all semantics

how about write some software yourself , compile and install

IMO the question really doesnt have any bearing on whether you have any IT skills at all (i'm assuming this is an IT job)

I would have said automatically using some form of systems management software; using a GPO to automatically deploy the software perhaps.

I guess that means I still get a cookie? 🙂

It's just a phone job to support end users with their digital cameras and software. Not great, but better than what I'm doing now. It should be good until I get my masters.

Would that be considered technically IT?

If you work for ANY company, MOST of the software you install is off of the network... I guess individuals rarely use it.

Why would they ask stupid questions like that?

Just to make sure I'm not an idiot I suppose. The job will be mostly making sure cameras work and can connect to the computer... so I'll be loading drivers and all.
