As of May last year, the majority of states have adopted the new 150 hour requirement to sit for the CPA examination. This is up from the 120 of years past, which is all that is required usually to obtain degrees at colleges as wel, so basically another 30 units = another year of school for accounting students. Has anyone here had any experience or comments regarding this new rule yet?

California has had this requirement for quite awhile. I'll be graduating in June with 225 quarter units (~150) semester units, and it took me four years. Yeah, I had to overload every quarter, but I figure it was worth it to be finished in 4 years. If you're just starting out I'd recommend calculating how many units you need to average per semester or quarter to reach it in 4 years. If it's too much you could always take classes over the summer at a community college. State Boards of Accountancy don't care where you get the units from, they just want you to complete the requirements.
