Man, that's one shady dealership then. My parents bought two 2001 civics from that same dealer so maybe those are salvaged too. :Q
I have a friend who recently graduated from UCSD and his parents bought him a used 528 BMW from a 'shop' near the Mexico border.
They later found out the car was a salvage title and what they did was find a bunch of wrecked bimmers and slap everything together to get a working car. :Q

That's what I used to say, but my parents just did.
But you know what, the build quality on that accord sitting in our garage right now is alot higher than the 2000 prizm I drive, which was built in CA.
10 years ago, this car would have been a luxury car. Today, it's just an accord.
CD player, power everything. All the body seams are measured in millimeters. Nothing on the interior/exterior, flexes/moves around.
I can't say anything about the powertrain though, only time will tell on that.

Nothing wrong with cars made in Mexico- it's not like car manufacturers just source out someone with a factory on the border and start sending them parts! It's owned and operated by the company under guidelines as stringent (or more) to those of the factories at the headquarters. Most of the Volkswagens that we see here in the U.S. (and maybe Canada) are made in Mexico, and they have amazing quality- their interiors are only 2nd to Audis in the mass produced automotive industry. Volkswagen Jettas and New Beetles are made in Puebla, MX. Passats, Golfs, Phaetons, Touaregs, Polos and Cabrios are made in Germany. VW also has plants around the world for other international markets, from Brazil to China.
If you have control over TQM (Total Quality Management- b-school slang), you can make the world's best cars from people living in the world's worst countries and economies. This concept is still fairly new and not perfected- this is why you see Mercedes struggling with M-Class SUVs out of Alabama, and earlier on for the first couple years, VW with the New Beetles out of Puebla.
Saying you're never going to buy a car from Mexico, China or other third world country is just ludicrous- like you'd be able to tell a difference these days.
