Nice. My Norton AV 2002 won't install on Windows XP and I didn't feel like buying a new version. I'll try AVG.
Are you sure you have 2002? I have that running on two XP machines.

I got SystemWorks 2002. Maybe the AV version is not 2002 then.

SystemWorks 2002 works fine with XP.

Installation: 2/5
How hard is it exactly to install any program?

Interface: 3/5
It's not all that spiffy looking, but i don't see how norton is exactly "better"

Support: 1/5
Dunno, it's free, it's worked.

Virus Scanning: 2/5
This is something i'd like an independent company to check out... i've always wondered about this and if AVG was up to par for being free.

Scheduling Scans: 2/5
I do scanning every day at 4am. A boot up scan could be useful tho.. altho, i wouldn't want that to do full scans on boot..

Updates: 4/5
very good.

The added email thing.. you can turn that off.. that's just to let ppl know it's gone thru a scanner. It only works w/ Outlook/express, which could be a problem for some people. Norton's email integration i would say is very good (dunno bout mcafee.. i hated it back a few years ago.. altho, now our school gives it to us if we want it). But for me, it's not a big issue as I've reverted over to pure web based email. Makes my life simplier.

I'm using eTrust EZ Anti virus (just the virus program from EZ Armor without the extra stuff), and it seems to work OK. I'm not so sure about it's email scanning, it doesn't seem to be doing much. I wonder if Norton would be signigicantly better?

AVG antivirus sucks-ass.

Hmmm... I've never had a problem and rather enjoy it.

I read that issue that other day and thought the same thing. I like using AVG. It doesn't seem to bog down my system at all.

However, I just learned that my school lets us download Norton Corporate Version 7.6 for free. Has anyone used that? Is it better than AVG Free?

I use AVG and like it. I used Mcaffee years ago on a win 95 machine but had to remove it because Mcaffee kept crashing the machine. I've used free av software since and have liked them all.

They only say that because of propoganda...

Kind of like how you will almost never read a bad review about hardware on some sites, 'cause the reviewers know they won't get any more freebies if they say something bad. Even if a motherboards is the lowest on a performance chart, the end of an articles reads something like "but still, it's a good value for your wallet" or whatever.

I spent 6 months testing all this.

But in the end our company's politics were more important, we ended up going with CA InoculateIT against my reccomendations. I wanted us to get Command Software, based on F-Prot engine...

Grisoft also offers AVG 6.0 Free Edition, which lacks some features, such as scan scheduling and product support, though it has a simpler interface. But since AVG missed six viruses on our Virus Detection test and had seven false positives, even the free version isn't worth the price.

hmm...i thought AVG does have scan scheduling. I have mine scheduled to scan every morning at 4:00am.

Although Norton/Symantec products have a following....the result of advertising, I've found it lacking comparend to Trend Micro's PC-Cillin.

Norton has all kinds of problems going from one program to another. Look around the web. Mucho probs going from v. 2000 to 2002.

In W2k you must reboot to install Norton's updates.

Trend Micro had the very first W2k certified virus program and you do not need to reboot to install the updates.

That combined with very knowledgable and fast tech help make it a winner imho.

This is not true of definition updates, it might be true of program updates (depending on whats updated). Program updates happen much less frequently than def updates (which can be daily).

I've used every Norton's program since it was available and every time I'm prompted to reboot....and I'm not talking about anything but antivirus....Three machines are running W2k right now. One has Trend and the other two Norton's.

Are you talking about program updates or Virus updates? What version are you running, and (if 2002) is autoliveupdate on? You should see the defs being updated occasionally, but it should not be causing a reboot...
