According to Consumer Reports, Volkswagon Jetta is not reliable, why is it still popular?

I'm trying to decide between paying more for a Jetta or just going with a Civic or Corolla or Protege5.
Now, I use to want a Jetta even if it costs more, but than I looked in consumer reports and this is what I found.

Volkswagon Jetta
from 94~2000 has been having MANY Electrical, Body Integrity, Power Equipment, Body hardware problems

from 94~98 models have been having problems with brakes, exhaust, paint/trim/rust, ignition problems.

This looks really ugly on the history chart (Many black marks) and Consumer reports also say VW Jetta will be lower than Echo, PT Cruiser, Protege, Saturn S-Series, Sentra, Cavailer, Sunfire, and Civic for the year 2002.

Compared to a honda or Toyota which are almost rock solid *in history* according to Consumer reports.

Now, what makes everyone still by a Jetta? Is reliability not a factor? The jetta looks **cking nice and I love the specs, but if it's going to start breaking down on me, it'll annoy me in the future, I'll rather go for a weak and sad, but rock solid Civic, Corolla, or Protege5. Ok ok, not rock solid, but not bad enough to have a black mark on the chart.

Has VW Changed this much in the last 2 years?
 
My cousin has a Jetta and her sister (my other cousin 😉 has a new Beattle, both are pretty reliable, but maintenance cost is very high for both cars. The Beattle has developed a frozen-pea-bouncing-around problem in the dashboard (something loose?), but nobody can figure how to fix it yet. The dealership did really tried, though 😉, and has benefited financially each time my cousin visit it.

Well, my Passat has been basicaly flawless.

I'm betting people like Jettas because they don't want to drive what everyone else drives. Also, the Jetta VR6 and 1.8T spank the crap out of the Japanese cars in road feel, power and drivability. After driving German, Japanese cars feel lifeless and dull to me. It's not just a power thing either. It's the FEEL of the car. It BEGS to be driven.

Of course, these are just my feelings and are subjective...

Shoot, I would have at least figured that you would have at least learned how to spell VOLKSWAGEN right by the amount of research you have done.

bingo, many people don't buy because of reliability😛 personally i'd stay away from vw😛
 
It may be true but there are times that consumer reports has their head up their a$$.
Don't take just their advice, check places like edmunds.com also.
 
Well a friend recently asked a tow truck driver which brand of car he tows the most... He said VW.

Perhaps not the most scientific way of car shopping, but she decided to stay away from them. He said the best seem to be Honda and Toyota.
 
They use effective advertising. They are like an Abercrombie & Fitch and push a lifestyle brand image. The Cabriolet commercial with Nick Drake's Pink Moon providing the musical backdrop was most memorable.

jettas have better interior....THATS IT...the subaru is cheaper, known to be more reliable, has more power, and is more fun
 
I've heard from other places that VW isn't as reliable as japanese or when it needs repairs it's more costly. Basically though people still buy them because compared to a sentra for about the same price the VW is a much more solid feeling car. Some people may like that and some won't, but VW definitely has a distinct feel to it that some people like.
 
Perhaps some cars are so good that people are willing to put up with a bit more mechanical trouble in order to drive one. You can see some of the popular cars with reliabilty problems...the corvette, for example.

Of course, if you are a male, you might want to reconsider. The jetta is pretty much regarded as a chick car. Back in the day when you saw a VW cabriolet on the freeway, you sped up because a hot chick was probabaly driving (or a guy guy). The Jetta is the modern day equivalent. The black jetta with the roxy sticker will almost always hold a very attractive female or a very gay male.

odd that you say that because around here, everyone and their mom drives a jetta. Its to the point where even the freshman rolling into town have jettas with 18" rims and a 3 foot aluminum spoiler.

LOL! Yeah, but CA cheese tastes so bad that it only gets used for filler in all the boob jobs in CA. 😉
 
I have never had much faith in what Consumer Reports says since up until the mid 90s they swore that Huffys were a great bicycle and about the only one they recomended. I was a VW mechanic, I knew people who tuned VWs and I still talk to the people where I used to work and a lot of these so called problems I just have not seen at the levels they are claiming.
