Not necessarily. Test drives are notorious for abuse...

Most cars can take some abuse and newer cars have things that prevent most of the damage that would occur in an abuse situation.

A good used car (obviously not a 20 year old beater) should still smell new and have most of the initial depreciation hit worked out of it. Warranty should still be intact.

I would NEVER buy a demonstrator for precisely that reason, it's usually easy enough to pick up one that's never been test driven, or to grab one out of their next shipment from what i understand, if you get a good dealer.

I'd be prepared to take the intial depreciation hit for a brand new car (especially something like a Yaris, which isn't going to drop $20k as you drive it out of the showroom), but that's just me, and i understand why many people are happier letting someone else take that hit & buying secondhand, with the associated risks that has :)

Personally my used car has been brilliant, but i will be buying new next time :)

All cars on the lot are available for test drive usually. Even the best dealers are not going to usually order you a car if they have it on their lot. Also ordering cars is usually limited to a small time frame.

I have bought two new cars in my time...both it was not worth it comparing to what I could have saved even buying a 6 month used one which looked, smelled and acted just like my new car did. The 6 month used car would have also saved me some time in the inital 'things' not right trip back to the dealership.

I have bought over a half dozen used cars. Only 1 was really a beater...the other were 2-4 years old or newer...much of the time because it was the only way to get them. My 92 GSR was no longer made in 1995 (the older style was a lot different). My 88 T-Top Mustang GT was not made in 1992. I bought a 1996 Saturn in 1999 to go back to school. All the previous cars had 15-30k miles on them...low for the year. I picked up my 1998 SE because it's the last year they made them and it was 2004 at the time, it had 68k on it, but owned by a Nissan shop owner so pretty well taken care of :)

Still everyone should own at least one new car in their life. It's a fun experience, but fleeting ;)
