Accidentally won item on eBay, now what?

I had two pages open on two different (inexpensive) items, comparing them. The auctions were within minutes of closing and in the heat of the moment I accidentally bid on (and won) the item I didn't want. I immediately (and politely) notified the seller, a large eBay store.

I'm assuming it's at the discretion of the seller as to what happens next. Anyone else ever experienced this? I'm always careful, but screwed up this time.

(BTW, I'm not interested on hearing opinions on eBay, so thread crap somewhere else.)

I'd think they will let you cancel your winning bid, but if it were me, I'd make you pay the auction fee.

I'd be making you pay the listing/relisting fees. You screwed up, now the second bidder won't buy it because they won't be covered under the fraud protection clause.

How can you accidently bid? You punch in a number, you press bid. Put password. You have to press submit twice.

But you bought it, and its inexpensive. Pay for it.

Who says he wasn't bidding on a 2003 Corvette Z06? ;)

EDIT: Ohhh, it says inexpensive in his post. :)

I have no problems paying for the auction fees, that's a given.

I doubt the individual who runs the eBay store is too concerned about the other bidders on the item, he sells hundreds of them.

I had already logged on and didn't realize the first page was still open (as I had several pages open at the time), and thus bid on the wrong item.

I think if this was a case of bidding on something and then changing my mind I would pay for it and suck it up, but I think this was an honest mistake. If he wants me to pay for it, then I will.

If you've contacted them already, wait for their response.

Depending on their response, I would offer to at least pay back their listing fees and if they push the issue pay for the item since you did bid and won it (albeit accidentally).

The seller can do the second chance option if someone else bid. THe other bids may not have been close to the same price, but you never know.

actually, ebay now has conventions in place to allow you to officially offer the item to the second highest bidder, with all protections. i forget exactly what its called, but its pretty new.

no big deal, mistakes happen all the time, if it's an honest mistake, most people will understand and at most make you pay the listing fee, unless they're a total dick...

This is bullshit!

Once you make a bid, you agree to it and your bid is a binding contract.

Not only are you trying to weasle out of your winning bid because you think you made a mistake but you are wasting this persons time. You really think he's concerned about you when you don't want to pay for the auction and you want him to spend time helping you out?

So much trouble for 8 dollar item so I don't bother any more.

The worst is when a bidder flakes out on an auction.
Some pos bidder flaked out on my auction .. and I let her off .. and left her a neutral since she said it was a mistake blah blah
She had 5 friggin days to email and me find out exactly what is what.

In return she left me a neutral ( my only one ) wtf ? She's lucky I let her off without paying for the item and she left me a neutral.
