Accidentally sending mail with 37 cent stamps.

Well on Thursday, I sent out two rebates and my Tuition check with 37 cent stamps. Except for the fact that I stopped by the post office a couple of weeks ago, there was no way that I was notified of the change. I had completely forgotten.

First, let me say that THEY ARE THE POST OFFICE. WHY CAN THEY NOT SEND A NOTIFICATION?

Anyhow, I realized this was the case after I sent my water bill, and the mailman wrote a note on the envelope and didn't take it. Luckily, my tuition check showed in the system today.

But what about the rebates? There were two for $40 each, both for a Western Digital Hard Drive purchased from Circuit City. There is nothing on the rebate about postage due mail... So I see it as they either have to accept it, or otherwise it will come back to me, no? Anyone have experience with this?

PS: Screw the USPS and their rate hikes. At least they never got around to taxing email.

the rebate company is unlikely to pay the $0.02 postage due, after all it is in their favor to not accept the underpostaged mail

Oh please - they announced this sh!t weeks ago. Hell - even my teachers in college brought it up in class. Do you live under a rock?

i got notices in my mailbox. read notices.
They were amoung the junkmail but it was there in black and white, our rates will increase to 39cents after such and such a date along with all the other hikes for priority etc etc.

Exactly, but if they do not accept, it must be returned to me, no?

They'll probably pay the 2 cents, then not send you the rebate, and blame it on yuo not sending it correctly. Pwned!

Maybe I have better things to do than discuss the postage rate. That's nice that your professors don't have any better material than to discuss the postage.

Please kindly advise me where I was supposed to learn this. I do not watch news, don't care for it.

If they pay the two cents, it was received, and they have no grounds for denying the rebates. It says nothing in the terms about postage due mail. If they reject it, I will have to receive it back, correct? So as long as I get it back in time, I should be fine.

I asked a postman today and he said he's seen a lot of 37 cent items and they seem to be going through, he's not sure if they're doing an unofficial grace period or what.

This is what i dont get if you dont have stamps and they return it to you. it costs $$ to return the letter hence they lose money.

letters should come back to you if you dont have sufficent postage

are you sure? if taht's the case, what's keeping people from flipping the return and mailing addresses, and then paying insufficient postage to save money.

Wait couple weeks to see if your rebate actually gets to the rebate company.

If not, give the rebate company a call, and ask them why your rebate didn't show up.

I assume that you kept copies of every rebates you send including the number that you can call when there's a problem.

They usually take several months to send rebates.

don't worry about the rebates. Just call in a few months and ask about the status. When they say they never recieved it say "oh really? I sent it in." then they'll just ask you to fax/email copies of eveything and you'll be golden.

You DID make copies, didn't you?

I think you just answered your own question. Start paying attention to the events around you. It's no different than a new law being passed... you can't claim ignorance just because you weren't notified.

well, it doesn't matter if you care to watch the news or not. the news is where you're supposed to learn this.

I had something embarassing happen to me with the last price increase. Before the increase, the post office printed a bunch of stamps without a price on them, since the amount of the price increase hadn't be settled. I happened to have a pile of them and forgot how much they were. I looked online at the post office website, and it stated my stamps were worth the higher value (when they actually were worth the lower value). Great, I thought. I'll just send all my Christmas cards with those stamps.

Not one card was returned. No one said a thing to me. But all throughout Christmas I heard people whispering and stopped talking when I approached. I overheard some of the conversations. The mailman came to their door asking for a penny for my card. They all paid it and all got my card. I was embarassed.

As for your rebates, I doubt the company will pay the extra money. Then you'll lose your rebate.
