Any way to get the DC going again? Right now when I boot up it says "Security Accounts Manager initialization failed because of the following error: directory services cannot start"

And then says please click ok to shutdown

Am I screwed here? I really dont want to re-install W2K3 and go through the long process of doing all the driver installs, windows updates, etc.

I think you'll have to rebuild. You may also have issues with AD and DNS now since the DC was not properly removed from the forest/domain. Hopefully, it was not holding any FSMO roles or you were able to successfully sieze the roles.

There is no backup.. its a test box at home but I just didnt want to go through the painstaking work of re-installing the OS, applying patches, etc. and then doing the same thing for the VM that I had running on the same box lol.

Guess thats what Ill be doing this weekend...

Use a virtualization product that supports snapshots. Build the 2003 box with drivers, patches etc and then snap it before the dcpromo. NEVER EVER snap a domain controller. But at least this way, you can easily revert to a fully patched box, pre-dcpromo.

shouldnt have to do much on the VM, just remove from the domain, then add it back once you rebuild your DC

The VM's are on the same partition as the DC was on.. so i lost it when i re-sealed the DC. since i cant log in, i cant access those VM files 🙁

The DC was on the actual laptop OS.. not a VM 🙁
