Accessing HDD help?

Ok i just got a new DVDRW drive from HP for a manf. replacement for my Pioneer DVDRW K-15. The one they sent me was a DVDRW+- ND-6500A. Ever since i installed the device, my HDD light is almost always on, and I can hear the drive accessing something. I dont see anything hogging memory/processing power. Is there a program that can tell you exactly what info is being pulled off the HDD or find out which app. is making my HDD light do this? I have a compaq V2000 series notebook specific model 2414NR. Thanks!
