I just signed my buddy up for access4less, and noted that he could not send netzero email through access4less servers, but I imagine could still receive it.
Fairly common practice would be to make use of the SMTP server of whichever connection you are using; in this specific case, I would suggest using smtp.access4less.net as opposed to smtp.netzero.com for the outgoing mail while connected to Access4Less. As stated above, using another ISP's outgoing mail server opens up a variety of issues which most tend to avoid at all cost.
Also, I have found a number of dialup companies block access to any and all outgoing mail servers BUT theirs. Rather annoying when one has, as also described above, setup their own domain and have their own SMTP protocol active (ie, smtp.yourdomain.com). A simple way to circumvent this annoyance is adding an additional "account" in your favorite POP3 client (Outlook, Eudora, The Bat!, etc) that accomodates each SMTP server one uses under each different connection. Of course, the POP3 address will remain constant, and is always accessible regardless of how one is connected to the web.
