I saw another thread and decided this hot deal deserves a thread of its own for kudos / rants.

Access4Less.net
access numbers search form

Special $4.95/month link (w/$8 setup) - Sometimes active, sometimes not!
(otherwise $5.95/month)
NO SETUP FEE LINK : Special no setup fee link -- MANY THANKS to galawdawg - stolen from later post :)
(otherwise $8 one time setup fee if you don't use the above "freedom list" link!)

Unlimited standard "56Kb" dialup
NO special software to download or install
NO ADS !!! NO BANNER!!! NO CONNECT ADS!!! NO (extra) POPUPS!!!
V.92 (Modem-On-Hold - take / make short call and maintain connection?)
Account history (dialup session info - when, how long, how much data, ...)

Beats Juno / NetZero / United $9.95/month hands down !
Can't even imagine what people think they get for $23?/month that makes AOL worthwhile!

If you search for internet access on Google, you'll get an ad for them for $4.95 per month. Not sure about the setup fee, but it's still $8 if not less.

keep in mind that phone setup of the account and phone tech support are extra, so better get a computer geek to do it for you if you're not comfortable fiddling with dial-up and email settings. Also, I don't think a newsgroup feed is included.

That said, I set my mechanic up with them, and while I was there, the service performed admirably. Well worth the $4.95/mo

Access4Less was perfect for dial up from my experience - it is unlimited and the service was excellent in Central Florida.

The connection will cut off after 5 hours then you need to re-dial but other than that it was 100% reliable.

There was an old thread on here where you could get the set up fee waived - it is probably long gone now though.

Whatever you do DO NOT sign up for Neucomm dial up access - it is the worst ever!

If someone wanted to use one of these services, and cancelled their netzero paid account, would they still be able to use their netzero email address?

I remember that too. It was from a link from freedomlist.com.

I used Access4Less for about 6 months before I switched over to cable. If I had to go back to dial-up, I'd definitely go back to A4L. It's a steal for the price and the only drawback was the the 5 hour disconnect timer. Other than that it's a great ISP.

One client had NetZero. When they canceled, NetZero was kind enough to give an additional month for free, just to help catch / enable switch over to new email address@access4less.net.

But long term - no, I don't believe NetZero will let you keep your @NetZero email address unless you're a paying customer.

These days, I strongly recommend you lease your own domain name at Godaddy for $8.95/year (or other inexpensive registrar) as a "vanity" domain. Then buy ultra cheap hosting / email service ( +/- one or two dollars / month). That way, you can be everybody / anybody / nobody @ yourdomain.tld . But much better than that, so long as you continue to pay to lease the domain name, it's yours for life. Regardless who your ISP is today or tomorrow or next year.

That's one way to have an email address "for life".

I agree, great advice.

If you NEVER WANT TO CHANGE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS ever again, you can have the same email address for life for under $14/yr.

$8.88 NameCheap domain registration (includes FREE email forwarding)
$4.99 RippleHost web hosting includes 5 email addresses, 100MB webspace, 1GB bandwidth, FTP, cPanel, forums, chat, pichosting, etc.

Hmm. Maybe they don't have a policy or easy way of ending the pay service and going back to the free service, without closing the acct.?

I've had NetZero and Juno accts, since their respective 1.0 days, and am still using them today, without any problems. My NetZero acct is now my primary e-mail address. I've had both of them for possibly 4 years now.

Plus, I don't get disconnected after 5 hours, and I haven't had to pay a cent for dialup access in nearly 4 years. :)

Incorrect, actually. Netzero email - both through any POP3 interface, and their web interface - is free for life. It is not required you ever be a "paying customer" to receive an email account. If you are a paying customer that cancels, they will of course most likely reduce your formerly premium/platinum email account to the level of a free one (less "on server" storage, smaller attachments, etc).

In short, netzero email accounts are always free, and one can honestly have as many as one desires. You need not even ever install or use their software - merely sign up via the free account sign up page. You must, however, be in an area code that they currently have access numbers for, as the sign up process request the number from which their software would/may be used; that is, unless you have a tolerance for a lower level of moral perpetude.

Thanks ActuaryTM -

I just signed my buddy up for access4less, and noted that he could not send netzero email through access4less servers, but I imagine could still receive it.

That's a security feature, thanks to the prevalence of spammers. Running an SMTP server that doesn't bounce off-network outbound mail will almost immediately get your server onto a black list, one that is actually hard to get off of.

This has been my ISP for around a year now IIRC. Service has been pretty good, but for awhile it was getting a little shaky. Seems to be better now. A month ago or so, they had some email problems. Some of my friends had their email rejected from Access4Less's servers. That seems to be fixed now.

When I first joined up, there was a link on Freedomlist to waive the activation fee. Ah, I see it posted above.

I used to play Multiplayer games a lot (e.g. Wolfenstein), but haven't in the last 6 months or so. I got spoiled by cable modem for awhile, so I can't tolerate the lag on dialup anymore. Yes, they have newsgroups, but I haven't used them in months. Just do some websurfing and light downloading now.

Be warned: If you want to use telephone tech support, there is a fee. I've never had to. I just email them. I connect through standard Dial-Up Networking. I'm not even sure if they have any "special" software to download, I've never used it if they do. I'm still on v.90 and generally connect at 48.0 Kbps. With Earthlink on this same modem/phone line, I used to get 49.3 Kbps. I don't know what changed.

Anyway, I give them a big thumbs up.

Drat, I just noticed that the OP says $4.95/mo. I'm paying $5.95. Maybe I should email them...
