Access remote computer to work on Quickbooks

Hi,
My dad has a small business that uses Quickbooks for their accounting and inventory. Sometimes my dad has to work in Quickbooks just entering the invoices and what not. He would like to be able to do that from home. He doesnt want to deal with a portable Quickbooks file since if he forgets to take it to work, it will be a problem.

What is the easiest way for him to login to the computer at work? The work computer is behind a DSL modem/router so I guess the ports will need to be forwarded. Are there any free solutions to achieve this? Any advise and suggestions are welcome.

Remote desktop?

Assuming XP Pro enable it and forward TCP port 3389 to his computer from the router. Than connect to the router's IP using the remote desktop client from outside.

I thought of that but they're using XP home. I guess when they ordered the PCs they figured it wasnt worth the extra money.

You could try UltraVNC but I would only perform it over a VPN connection using newer standards. Accounting data is precious.

there are good encryption options for ultravnc.

I might be able to upgrade that comp with XP pro. Does the client comp need XP Pro also? If not then how do I tuen it on on the host comp?

Actually just read up on it. Only the host needs to be XP Pro. I will give Ultravnc a try also. Thanks for your help guys. If it doesnt work, I know where to come back to

As mentioned, Windows Remote Desktop does this very well, but requires the host computer (where the data is located) to be XP Professional. Upgrading an XP Home PC to XP Professional is (normally) quite simple. If only a single host is required, you only need forward TCP Port 3389 to the IP address of the Remote Desktop host computer.

Hamachi works well for this and no router configuration needed on either side.

I got it working with realVNC. Turns out that I had to manually configure the service in the router because the built-in one was using a different port. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
