Access Protected Files

My windows xp installation got very corrupted while changing my video card, and since I didn't know how to use recovery console I decided to put a new installation of windows xp on a different partition on my computer. Now I need to copy all my documents over from the broken partition to the new partition, but it keeps telling me the documents folder is not accessable and that 'Access is Denied.'

When I right click on the folder and go to properties I only get 3 tabs: General, Sharing, Customize. I don't see any options there that would help me change the access restrictions on this folder. Both the Program Files & Windows folders in the old partition still exist with all of their contents in that partition. What can I do to access the files in the My Documents folder?

Are you logging on with Administrator rights?

Yes, the new partition has just one account and I am logging in with administrator rights.

Use this program: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Handle.html

then run it like this in the command prompt:
handle "My Documents" (or whatever the name of the folder is)

see if it lists anything.

What is the type of the partitions? I think if you went from FAT32 to NTFS, you have to claim some kind of ownership on your files. The partition in which your files are contained should be converted to NTFS and you should be able to find a security tab which will let you assume ownership over you files.

Thanks for the link, everything is working fine now! I was trying to find that security tab earlier but I didn't know I had to disable the Simple File Sharing to see it.
