Access computer behind switch?

I have been using VNC lately and I am having problems with a computer behind a switch. I have used it fine with my router since I could just use port forwarding, but how do you set it up with a switch? The switch is a netgear fs605. Can you access single PC's behind a switch? Thanks.

If you access them from inside the LAN use the internal IP address.

If they are on the Internet without a Router they must have individual External IPs.

Otherwise, pending on your setting you can use Software Firewall to do the same Open Port Trick as the Router Does.

I am accessing the computer fron outside the network so I can't use the internal address.

What firewall allows you do the "Open Port Trick"?

if the switch is hooked to the router, you can forward to the attached devices on the switch. All you need is the internal IP of the vnc server you wish to access, and forward the proper port to the internal IP.

P.S. The page is for UltraVNC but the principle might apply to most remote control program.

Ya i already saw that in a previous post. I am not having a problem behind a router since I can port forward, but I do not know how to port forward with a switch, or how to access a computer that is behind a switch.

This switch is transparent it does not play any Role in the IPs and or it the port.

So then why would it not let my connection through when i tried to connect to the computer that was behind it?

There is no firewall running so there shouldnt be anything blocking the ports right?

First make sure you can connect from one internal system to the target system. If that is working, then you need to configure your router/firewall (assuming it is a NAT device) to forward port requests to the system you are trying to control. If you have more than one system you are trying to accesss from an external system, you will need to configure each VNC server on a different port so you can configure a forward to each internal system (IP).

In a nutshell, the switch is an unmanaged device and therefore doesn't block anything going through it (it is transparent). The key is to make sure the internal test works.
