Acceptable heat for a LGA775 Prescott chip?

I have a 3.6ghz intel P4 as stated in the title. Does anyone know what the temp should be runnimg at load? I have a feeling mine is running too hot. at idle its at 60c and under load it gets near 80c. I have tried a thermaltake silent 775 heatsink and that was acually worse. It ran 7c warmer under load. As of now I have the stock heatsink back on and a home made fresh air intake on it. I fabbed up an intake on the front fan on my case with a 4" dryer hose to my window. I know that sounds lame but its 20-30f here outside now and it cools the cpu temp by 7c under load.
So after all of may rambling ..... does anyone REALLY know what temp this cpu should run at? I know these run hot ... but I cannot find the info I want anywhere... especially on intels site ... what a joke that is!
For the record ... the 60c at idle is in the BIOS. My MSI "core center" utility says at idle I am at 46c
As of right now MSI tells me cpu is at 46c and system is at 29c.
 
hmmm...are you positive you put the heatsink on correctly? *thin* layer of thermal paste? if corecenter is right, you are fine. could the bios be buggy maybe? 80C load is like a nuke...lol
 
OK I am lost as to which program is telling you what...

Corecenter idle/load

MBM5 idle/load

Speedfan idle/load

Everest Home edition idle/load


Basically try a few other programs for us to get a feel...


I would look at currnt bios installed and then go to manufacturers webpage and see if newer bios is available...may have a reporting fix....


Also google and get an app called throttlewatch...run it...At 80c you would have to be throttling...If not you know the temp being reported is bogus...
 
Ok, let me try and clear up your questions. In BIOS (the most current one) my idle temp is 60c-ish.
The MSI utility called "core center" tells me my cpu temp at idle (without my air intake on) is 53c when I first go into bios, my temp is about that ... but then goes up steadily to about 60c . My system temp is at 34c at idle.
I have no way of telling what my temp is in bios under load.
I ran Throttlewatch and ran Half Life 2 for a half an hour. Temp was 75c and I had 0% cpu throttling.
The fan speed changes as the cpu gets warmer. at idle it is about 2500rpm and when it warms up anywhere from 2500-4000 rpms.
 
These CPU's typically run at around 65C under load. I think that is what the one at Tom's is running at in the case during his long term test.

You can't reuse the stock cooler unless you replace the TIM pad, btw.

What thermal compound are you using?
 
Incidentally, Intel's approved case design for these chips has a hole in the side with a duct right to the CPU fan, I believe.

It's not really possible to tell you what temp the chip should run at. There are way too many variables.
 
I never reused the stock heatsink. I put the thermaltake on when it was built. I used the thermaltake and artic silver ... ran too hot so I tried out the stock fan. That seems to be better. The one thing that I wonder is.... the stock intel heatsink has a 4 pin connector and changes speeds as it gets hotter. The thermaltake uses a 3 pin connectorand runs at the same speed all the time. Think that could be causing the thermaltake to run hotter under load?
 
Take the side pannel off the case for a while, temps should fall quite a bit, until you find whats causing this heat problem.
 
Taking the side off wont help any when I am using my fresh air intake. that is drawing the cold air from the outside (of my house) to the inside on my case.
 
hmm, well at 80°C your CPU would already be throttling back in order to try to reduce its temperature hence reduced performance.
 
I had the same problem with 3 LGA775 processors, 3 different motherboards and 4 different HSF's.

My conclusion is the application of thermal coumpound is key. Unlike any other processor that I have used, where I usually apply a very, very thin layer of AS5, I applied a moderate amound of AS5 and the temps came down 10c. I now run at 40c idle and 58c full load. Nothing to wriet home about, but I was running at 50c idle and 70c under load.

Can you define a "moderate" amount? vs the 1/2 of a BB that they recommend. I think I will try the Thermaltake heatsink again .... I'll wait a while to see if you reply to this ... if not ... i'll guess.
