I am trying to help my MIL figure out her computer issue. Awhile back, it started acting slow. Stopped recognizing cdrom intermittently. Then couldn't ctrl-alt-del. Couldn't connect to net, run any virus scan, anything -- slow death. So after many hours, I said heck with this and formatted it tonight and reinstalled XP.
So I then installed things in this order:
ISP (family video online)
Accelenet (supposed to accelerate things -- fam vid recommends using it)
*oddly, while this was downloading, kept getting messages like "critical update needed -- go to reg-fix.com, microsoft-patch.com, sw4e.com,..." etc. Ignored them, figured I would get my critical updates from microsoft, not pop-ups.
Installed Ad-aware -- got rid of 13 items right off the bat! I haven't done anything yet to warrant this except get Accelenet as famvid said to do!
Things started to act goofy. Lost ctrl-alt-del. Can't do msconfig to see what's starting up. Try to dl spybot -- won't run after installed. Remove Accelenet in case that's my issue. Still no spybot, no ctrl-alt-del, no command line.
Reboot to safe mode. Run msconfig -- the only starting item is called "codq.exe" What the heck is this??? I take it off and reboot. Same issues. No ctrl-alt-del, no command lines, etc. Things generally slow.
What's the deal? Any suggestions? Should I format again, this time boot sector too?
