anyway... i need a java compiler... i was thinking of getting borland jbuilder. but is it worth it to go with the pro? or should i stick with standard. academic price for pro is $100, and $50 for standard.

As far as specific software you're looking for, ask your professor/TA, as well as other students who have taken the class or are taking it with you. There may be a 'recommended' package that will also be supported (or an attempt made to support, as opposed to letting you fly or crash on your own).
I certainly would not use the Sun JDK -- the thing still outputs to DOS. Besides, using one with a GUI will automate a lot and should be easy to learn, especially with JBuilder. That's the one I'd get...
