Actually, I think the discount is somewhat offset by the donation that IBM is making to the school with each purchase. If you add the discount plus the donation, the price is competitive with other deep discounters...

cal students have good deals on ibm laptops. the TSW is currently selling the T42 PM-1.7GHz XGA 40GB 512MB for $1629.

and the harvard site is currently not loading for me.

It says the list price for the T42 is over $2k, but on IBM's website, it's on for $1800, on harvard it is at $1551
