Academic - Vista Home Premium Upgrade

This seems like a great deal for Windows Vista Premium if your a student. It looks like you have to give them a copy of your school ID card, so you really do have to be a student or school staff. I haven't ordered yet, but does anyone see anything wrong?

Update: They validated my student info on 1/25 but I have not received it yet. It still just says approved too.

Some other people thought the customer service is pretty bad with Campus Tech. ProsperoLT gave another link to get Vista for $70. http://www.academicsuperstore.com/market/marketdisp.html?PartNo=784207 It would probably be a better choice at this point.

I think it means its not a cutdown upgrade version or in otherwords its a normal upgrade version.

Argh....just realized it's an upgrade....building a new system so need a full version :disgust:

All Windows upgrades are full version software, you just have to prove you're a prior owner of a valid Windows product to start the install. People have upgraded to XP Pro using Win 3.1 floppies as their authentication tool.

That is, unless MS has changed something, which wouldn't surprise me in the least.

This will be my first build, my other pc is a Dell...and their Xp cds wont work with another pc.

No, you don't need to get a full version as long as you have a copy of some other version of windows lying around. It may have to be Win2000 or newer, but I think it's pretty lax overall.

This full retailed version of Home Vista Premium looks like a best deal unless you're qualified college students or school faculties but not for K12 graders and not sure why? My son is senior in HS who would not qualify for the deal.

most schools will have Windows Vista for student available soon like in april or something. So, if your school already gives u XP upgrade licenses for like 20 bucks or so, u might be lucky to get one for vista soon.

Home premium? I don't think it's worth it. It's just slightly beefed up Windows XP Home functionality wise, Vista Home Premium still doesn't allow you to join domain or remote into your PC. Big no-no.

Business is minimum I would consider.

I just bought two. My bookstore at school JUST got Office 2003 so I don't think the will have Vista any time soon. CampusTech's online verification system for students was a breeze as well! No need to fax in any IDs. Great deal, thanks!

Home Premium is essentially the current MCE. MCE is far more useful than joining a domain for home users. I have XP Pro, and I can easily tell you the number of times I've had to join a domain: 0.

Win 2000 and up is a valid upgrade path for Vista. Win ME and down is not.

I think the advertisement is quite misleading. My interpretation is that:

1. There is no difference between an academic version and a retail version

2. You are purchasing an Upgrade version

3. Unlike previous Windows upgrades, Upgrade version REQUIRES that you have the old operation system INSTALLED on your system. For example, if you are installing a new HDD and upgrading from XP to Vista (upg version), you first need to install XP then upgrade.

At my school we get an iso of XP for the academic sales.

Is this a full box version?

with xp upgrade on new system I just had to put in a win98 disk in for a few seconds. Is vista the same way or do I have to install xp and then vista?

I would like to see the proof of this. I highly doubt that MS is changing the way they do the upgrades. Links?

Yup the statement "Academic version is Full-version software" is a little misleading. What they mean is that this is a Full version of a "Upgrade", just like the retail version. Also since this is not an OEM version, I doubt MS changed their upgrade style.

I just installed an upgrade to Vista Home Premium and you only have to insert a cd with a previous OS. The previous version does not have to be installed.

I just installed an upgrade to Vista Home Premium and you only have to insert a cd with a previous OS. The previous version does not have to be installed.

You just need to put in your dell xp cd for a second when the upgrade CD asks for old OS proof...the dell xp cd should work just fine for this.

It will be interesting to see if this is actually true. My hunch is that it is not true. I mean, what happens if your motherboard craps out? Are they gonna make you buy a new OS just because you had to replace it? I think not.
