I'm looking to build a new machine in the next month and my wife is a teacher, so I'd like to take advantage of the academic software that would be available to her. Can someone point me to a reputable place where we could purchase academic software? I'm mostly interested in the OS (XP Pro or Media Center are preferred).

You would usually get it at the school. Either the IT dept or in some cases,
the school bookstore has it.

Well, she works in a middle school, so there's no bookstore ;)

I could have her talk to IT, but I seem to recall some thread a long while back talking about a website that's completely legit and offers academic software to students and teachers. You have to send a photocopy of your school ID badge to get the discount.

I have only ever been able to get an academic discount by purchasing directly (at the school) or by having someone in IT buy it for me. Any place you see offering academic discounts online is probably not legit. Especially if they dont verify academic affiliation.

When I was a student, I used gradware.com which requires a photo ID and proof of employment by a school.
