Academic Dishonesty

I just turned a fellow student in for academic dishonesty and am feeling somewhat odd about it. I usually maintain that rats are a lower form of life, but somehow I justified my actions.

Anybody every turn someone in knowing full well there would be serious consequneces for that individual?How did that make you feel.
 
well what was his particular infraction that caused you to rat him out. That will be the deciding factor if you are a rat or not.

What if his school gives out grades on a quota system, something similar to what was recently voted upon by Princeton faculty? This would be in his personal interest.

we have no idea how his school curves. if a set percentage of each class HAS to fail, it could potentially screw him and a lot of other people over.

especially if your school has a honor code, you should have turned them in.

point well taken, but considering that "there is nothing worth having that isnt worth cheating for," we really need to hear this guys reasoning before passing any more judgement.
 
I've never done that and probably never would. I'm not the kind that rats on people though.

Turning in an academic criminal will not add to your karmic burden.
 
The student had aqcuired the the soulutions to numerous quiz/homeworks.The student distributed the solutions to other members of my class. The Prof confronted my class with this on the last day of class and said that Upwards of 30% of the class was implicated in the cheating. Now realize that that this was a second semester Electromagnetics course and that the takehome quizs requiered alot of time and effort and also accounted for a large portion of the grade. The prof also put a human face on the issus when he had a girl stand up in class and said that this girl would get a B due to the fact the people had performed artifically well on the homework.

Note: There was no other way for the stundet to acquire the solutions except from swiping them from a profs office or a lab, as they are questions made up by thr PRof. and so are not available online etc.
 
I would rat on any one of you.

IN FACT, my certification pretty much states that I must come forward with knowledge of fraud. It's my ethical duty and insures the integrity of my credentials. Sure, this isn't school work I'm talking about, but the principal is the same. don't want the heat, then don't cheat.

You're missing the point of school. It isn't the grade, it is the knowledge you acquire. Doing the homework will benefit the 70% far more in life, then the 30% who got the higher grade. Once you graduate, no one cares what grade you got. They care whether or not you can do the job. The 70% who did the homework will be better positioned than the 30% of cheaters. It will always catch up with them.
