Is there some software out there that will encode mp3's on the fly to ac3 and output thru spdif?

A software alternative is redocneXk[4], which provides real-time AC3 encoding comparable to Soundstorm on Creative's Audigy2 and later sound cards. However, early versions of these alternatives may still be lagging behind the Soundstorm in terms of reliability, ease of use, and CPU utilization.

why..? you'll still have the same number of channels as is encoded in the mp3.. only now you've gone from one lossy format to another.

is there any particular reason you can't use pcm?

I believe, IIRC, that the ffdshow audio filter then output in AC3 format.

Would this do the trick???

Just curious.
Not sure about encoding on the fly but it might output on the fly.
I honestly have no idea what thats used for but it says under the "Output" tab "AC3" so it might be what your looking for... :)

Edit:
If it is you can get the latest build of ffdshow here

For some reason when using pcm the receiver doesnt use the subwoofer, i just get mids/highs but no lows. I tried fiddling around with the receiver but nothing works, im hoping this will fix the problem.

Ill give these apps a try later, thanks.

that's not going to change when you encode to ac3. if the source material is 2 channels, the ac3 stream will be 2 channels (not 2.1).

what kind of receiver do you have?

That cant be, im listening to songs on my computer and i have bass, but while going thru spdif to the receiver i have no bass. I believe pcm is only 2.0, if i encode it to 5.1 ac3 that should fix the problem.

you can't. the only way to derive 5.1 channels from 2.0 channels is by using a matrix decoder of some type (i.e., dolby pro-logic ii) and using the output as the input to the ac3 encoder.

if your main speakers can't handle the lower frequency range, then set them to "small" or something equivalent on your receiver. your receiver should then place a crossover on the main speaker output signal.
