AC Problems HELP

Got an older pontiac bonneville whcih I absolutely love, the problem is the AC works for the first few minutes the car is on and then it stops working completely. Does this mean the freon needs refilled or something else?

It's hard to say. It could be an electrical problem or it could be a refrigerant problem.

What year is the car?

Also, a friend told me that my car takes some odd refridgerant, is he full of it or should I just take it to a mechanic.

He's full of it. From the factory, that vehicle came with 2.4 pounds of R12, which was standard up until the mid 90's. It may or may not have been converted to R134a which is the replacement for R12. If it's had any AC work in the past 10 years, it was probably converted over to R134a.

Neither of these refrigerants are odd, they are industry accepted refrigerants that are in use in 99.9999% of all vehicles on the road.

Is it hard to replace? I know you can buy it in the store now, but how much and how does one go about doing it

No, autozone has a refil kit for $20 (if you are low)

But this is the easy/cheap way out...maybe not the most advised way.
