AC power adapter question ** Both chair and adapter are AC**

I have a speaker built into a bean bag chair that uses AC 10v 1.2A,

I have an AC adapter that is 12v 1A,

The AC adapter info from the label:

AC Adapter
Class 2 power unit
MODEL: SH-AC0121000
INPUT: 120V AC 60Hz
OUTPUT: 12V AC 1000mA

can I use this adapter with this chair?

I think this adapter came with the chair, but I never used it, but I want to use it now.

Thanks in advance.

I'm going to assume that you checked that everything is DC.

As for the adapter, I wouldn't count on it. If there's a voltage regulator in the speaker amp, it'll almost certainly be fine, but unless the chair itself is stamped something like "5-12V" I wouldn't take the risk.

No, he asked a valid question. Does the wall wart put out AC or DC?

I live in NJ so whatever a normal power outlet in the US puts out.

You're 100% sure it outputs 12v AC? that seems weird. The speaker and the adapter put out the same wattage but having more voltage on the adapter could fry the speaker. But I am pretty sure the speaker would require DC.
I would double check if the speaker needs AC or DC.

Thats just my 2 cents.

How about what is on the input panel of the device (bean bag speaker chair) in question?

AC to AC wall transformer? That seems kinda weird. Don't think I've ever seen one.

The old-school NES adapter puts out AC. The NES had an internal rectifier, so DC adapters still worked.

I know some people that fried a bunch of cable modems because they kept using a cord from a Westell DSL modem...and it would output AC.

Yep. That's one of those unusual adapters that doesn't output DC.

The only thing this thread proves is that little, if any, attention is paid to the requirements of the device that needs it most.

If you want to drop the 12vac to 10v consider that each silicon diode will have a voltage drop of about 0.7volts, so 2 of them will get you down to 10.6V. But use a multimeter and measure the voltage to be sure because it may not be putting out exactly 12V. Also make sure to measure it under load. Make an equivalent load by measuring the input impedance to the chair with resistors of the proper power rating. Also it wouldn't hurt to use a full wave bridge rectifier, a capacitor and a voltage regulator to make a proper DC power supply out of that AC transformer.

Or you could just buy a regulated 12VDC power supply that can provide enough current to power the chair's amplifier.
