So my AC craps out. Find out the compressor is gone. Turns out the AC unit is from the 70s and the furnace is around from that time also. AC guy comes out and offers me price for AC and then also for AC/furnace combo.

AC only $3384
AC/furnace combo $5180

I plan to live here in this house maybe another 3-4 years and then sell. What do you guys think?

Thanks

EDIT: just to clarify, so should I spring for the one or for both. I'm doing AC for sure, dunno about furnace.

that's roughly the same pricing I was given. Having AC is a selling point (at least where I live)

You might ask around and see if your utility company has any incentives to assist with an upgrade, as these newer units are certainly more economical than the ones from the 70's. Seems I got about $1200 in incentives years back, when we upgraded.

wait.. he gave the option of just getting new AC? how the heck?

new law says min efficiency of AC= SEER13. back in the 70's i bet it was like Seer6.

current furnace/coil should match efficiency of ac compressor. else need to replace coil to match ac unit.

yes get both.
