AC Freezer 64 Pro + X2 4600 = high temps

I just upgraded my AMD 64 3500 with stock heatsink/fan to a new AMD X2 4600 with AC Freezer 64 Pro.

With the old 3500 my idle temps were:
CPU: 50
System: 50
GPU: 60

With the new 4600 my idle temps are:
CPU: 58 (!)
System: 46
GPU: 53

Granted, I'm in Alabama and it's hot as hell here, but a 8 degree JUMP in CPU idle temp is a bit alarming. If anything I was expecting a 8 degree decrease.

The install of the Freezer Pro went fine. I took out my PSU and graphics card so I could easily remove the 3500. Popped in the new CPU and latched on the Freezer. I plugged it in to the CPU fan port on my mobo, put everything back in closed up the case.

My case features two intake fans, a side intake fan and a rear exhaust fan. The Freezer is positioned to blow air to the back of the case which is sucked out by the rear exhaust fan.

I've monitored these temps in NV Monitor. I haven't tried gaming or running any benchmarks because I'm afraid I'll fry my new CPU!

Does anyone have any advice on how to get these temps down?

Have you tried verifying those temps using a different monitoring program or the BIOS?

NV Monitor on my NF3 250GB board currently reports an idle temp that's roughly 20-25C that any other monitoring program or BIOS.

Have you felt the fins of the Freezer yet? Are they really hot? Since it is a dual core, I would think that type of temperature is expected.

I have the Freezer 64 Pro and my idle temps are 48C on the CPU. I have an X2 3800+ that I'm still doing overclocking testing on but overclocked to 2.6ghz, it's idling at about 48-50C and maxing out at 63C. This is in 90F weather so I'm not exactly in a cool location myself. With the air conditioning on, it's about 55C load.

I just felt the fins. They're pretty warm, yeah. So dual cores are supposed to run about this hot?

I guess I just didn't think the new CPU with the Freezer would be running this warm, but, like you said, it is a dual core so I guess it should be expected.

i have a 4800 with a freezer 64 pro and my idle temp averages from 38 to 42. it's sitting at 41 right now.

As mentioned everywhere in the C&C forums, idle temperatures do not matter. My load temps max out at 41C on my 3200+ w/ F64P but it's always with A/C on. Have you updated the BIOS? If the Freezer feels warm to the touch, is the fan at full speed? Mine always feels cool even while full loading....

I have CnQ (w/ Q-Fan) enabled with a target of 69 in BIOS (latest version 1016 on my A8N-SLI Deluxe).

I'm pretty sure the fan is not at full speed. It's very quiet.

I disabled Q-Fan and with the Freezer running full blast dropped my temp 2 degrees. But it's still idling at 56 degrees.

So this is OK for a dual core?

😱 jeebus. that's still really hot. could just be Asus mobo being itself because so many of their boards report temps that are 10 degrees higher...

56C at max fan on an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe and AC Freezer 64 Pro is too high. I would really investigate the airflow of your case, I have an Antec P160.

Hmmm...Asus boards are known for reporting overly high temps. Try downloading a CPU Core temp monitoring program from Xtremesystems. I forgot the name but it's in their forums. Also, If your temps drop 8 degrees when you take off the side panel, then maybe your case airflow isn't enough. What kind of case do you have? What kind of fans and how many each? Are your hard drives blocking the intake fans?

Cough cough. It's time for tinsniping all the coverings on the fan intakes as well as getting yourself a Scythe Kama Bay or mod three 5.25" bays to fit a 120 mm. Cough cough.

<-reason for coughing....I've done it myself already--dropped about 9 degrees or so from changing all the cooling and modding the case.

This is exactly why any time anyone asks me about cases I always stress large 120mm fans for quieter operation as well as making sure that the fan grills are large and free flowing. It doesn't matter if the case supports 250mm fans if the size of the holes in the fan grill is the size of pin holes. One of the reason why I chose the Antec P160.

Yep, I cut the tiny intake holes on my Wave Master and replaced the rear mesh grille with a standard one (mounted rubber screws in the process). Also added a 120mm side fanhole, now the case runs pretty cool in the low 30C range. However it is a bit loud with dual 40CFM 80mm fans in the front, but not that bad since they are all rubber mounted.

my AMD X2 4200+ runs idle about 35-38 C
under decent load about 42-45 C
and under pretty full load (like 3dmark06-ish load) about 50-51 C

about 85F in the room right now, my x2 4200 is idling at 41.5C. Under FULL load (both cores at 100%, 2 instances of Lame running), it got up to 55C. When both cores are at 100% for a while this thing gets extremely hot, however if only one core is maxed out the temps resemble single-core max-load temps (50C) which makes sense. Using a freezer64 pro as well.

While I cannot offer you a solution, I can tell you that my X2 4600+ idles at 34C with a Zalman CNPS7700. I have the non-deluxe version of the same motherboard and I use PC Probe II to measure my temps.

I took the side panel off my case and the CPU dropped from 58c to 50c. System and GPU stayed about the same
Its not ur case, its not the cpu cooler.....my guess is its the IHS not seating well enough.
If ur game, remove that and i'll bet ur temps drop significantly, though i'm not sure if the Freezer can mount like that.... 😕

When one initially installs a HSF w/AS5, does it take a while for temps to drop? I just installed one & my idle temps on my A64 3200+ is running 45c @ idle. That seems a little high to me seeing's how it isn't overclocked.
If it does take some "settling in" time, should one leave the pc running constantly or turn it on for awhile, then off for awhile?
