AC Arc welding tips?

Gillbot

Trying to weld up my exhaust on my beater car. Not having much luck...

Tried 1/16" 6013 at about 65 amps on an AC arc welder (all I have access to) but I got ZERO penetration on the flange and I blew a couple holes in the piping i'm trying to weld to it. Any ideas?

but the muffler shop won't do repairs because of the catalytic converter. Has to do with legality and emmissions testing here. I'm trying to do it myself to at least get an initial test.

no penetration - not enough heat

blowing holes - too much heat.

😉

I haven't welded arc in years... kinda forget how to do it

I figured that much. 😉

I just don't know how to compensate. This was my very first time welding arc EVER.

I highly suggest practicing on scrap before working on something that you don't want to ruin.

It would be easier to TIG your tailpipes btw.

Cheers!

and I don't have access to a TIG so I'm stuck. I practiced on a spare piece of pipe a bit. It's the flange I need to weld to. I can't get the penetration.
