I got an electronic dartboard that didn't come with the power adapter. It takes D batteries as an alternative but eats them up pretty quick. Would like to get a power adapter instead. Buuut I don't know what to get. The dartboard doesn't have any information on it. I did find a PDF file of the manual online, but it just mentions an AC to DC adapter.

I think This could work but I dunno. It could also go up in smoke when I plug it in (had that issue with power adapters in the past :) ) Think that adapter from amazon will work?

how many D batteries does it take? at 1.5 VDC each, the wall wart should be 1.5(x) VDC.

This. It'll also be able to take a slightly higher voltage. If the adapter was 9v, you can probably use a 12v power supply safely. Also, Radio Shack and similar stores sell adjustable adapters that can operate at many voltages and use different plugs for just such an occasion as this.

It would help if you post the make and model of the dartboard. You need to watch the Voltage of the adapter and also the Polarity. You can easily check this with an ohm meter. Put one probe on the battery positive terminal of the battery holder (without the battery installed) Then check for continuity to the power socket where the ac adapter goes. The one you get continuity to, is where the ac adapter Positive side has to match up to. And of course, there are a few sizes of power connectors, especially of the barrel type. You need to match up both the outer diameter and also the diameter of the pin.

It takes 4 D batteries. Here is the PDF of the manual i found via google (don't hurt your neck reading it :) ). You can see from the first page (zoom in!) it lists a couple of adapters, one 6v 300ma adapter, and one 9v 600ma. The information in the boxed area on the first page is relative to many different models so not sure which of the two adapters would have been originally packaged with the dartboard I have.

I wish all adapters just universally worked with everything :X Thanks for the help!

Buy a universal adapter and set it to 6 volts. Make sure the polarity is correct though. It will look something like this: (-●)+ or this (+●)- The first one is negative tip and the second one is positive tip. You will see the diagram next to the adapter connection.

While 4 D batteries do equate to 6 volts, it's not a certainty that a 6V adapter would do the job.

You're going to need to provide more details about the device before we can give you a better answer.

Pics of the device would be really useful. Also pics of the circuit board inside.

For example, does it have a power adapter female port and all you want to know is which adapter to buy? Or does it have no adapter and you want to modify it to accept one?

Also, while the other posters in this thread might be correct about the voltage and polarity, they failed to mention current. If you use an adapter that cannot supply enough current, bad things can happen. Especially considering some (most) power adapters may lack fuses or circuit breakers in the event of overload.

if it uses 6v of batteries, i would imagine it requires a 9v power supply. like said though, you cant tell for sure unless its labled on there.

your safest bet is to get a 6v dc adapter and wire it right into the battery terminals.

Save yourself some money and check out the nearest thrift store. They often have boxes of used power adapters for next to nothing. I replaced the last one I broke for $0.49.

look on the back of the dartboard, what is the model # of that exact dartboard?
