AC Adapter Dead?

Hey guys, first and foremost, thank you so much for taking the time to click on my thread!

I've got a Dell Vostro 1400 which I purchased back in 2008, and the 1 yr warranty is expired. Now, the problem I'm having is that the AC adapter is.. no longer working from what I gather, for the green led light on the charger no longer lights up whenever its plugged into the power-outlet, and my laptop is no longer charging.

Whenever I plug the AC adapter in.. I hear this slight.. what sounds like a high-pitched frequency, like a "beep". So I was just wondering if any of you had any experience like this? And if the symptoms I'm describing means that.. its dead?

Also, my particular adapter is the 90W version because I had my laptop configured with an Nvidia 8400GS M. And if you guys think the adapter has failed, is there a cheaper place to get a replacement other then from Dell? because I checked the part on their site and its really expensive.. around $70-ish shipped.

I appreciate any input/help. Thank you so much for your time!

Actually $70 isnt much for an adapter as long as it is a good one. I suppose that you could buy a universal adapter from Frys Electronics (which might actually be better/more reliable), but dont be surprised if the ask isnt over $100 (I think that Ive seen the real good ones for about $110 - $120). You could go ahead & buy one & return it if you dont like it or find that it is not the problem.

Thanks for the replies!

I went over to Fry's and picked up a.. Kensington K38066US. Funny thing, I asked multiple employees if this particular charger would CHARGE the battery, because I was gettin a no from one guy, and a yes from another. Eventually they decided to just test it out on my laptop since I brought it with me.. and the good news is, that it charges the battery! I'm fairly satisfied with this ac-adapter thus far, like 10 minutes ahah, its MUCH smaller then the OEM dell charger. Again, thanks for your time and the tips!

yeah many chargers will operate a notebook but not charge it.

a difference in 1% of original specification of design (voltage/etc) can kill your battery so fast its not funny.

be careful with generics - if you can get a used one off ebay - better than a generic
