Absolute Best Office XP alternative

You guys know what I'm talking about. I'm trying to find out which of these $50 office alternatives is the best (most like microsoft). I need powerpoint, excel, and word and needs to be able to work with .doc .exe .ppt

OpenOffice.org

open source, change anything you want, based on star office from sun. clones of wordperfect, lotus 1-2-3, powerpoint, and etc. it can read any microsoft file, and alot of others from the other companies. it can also save as microsoft files. completely interchangable.

OpenOffice is a great alternative. It doesn't have a grammar check built into the word processor. I believe Star Office has one though.

open office for sure. i have been using it for about 3 months now, and i love it. it can also save into microsoft word format, if you ever need to do that as well.

If you need high-end Excel functions, other suites may not be appropriate. I know your limit is $50, but MS Office XP Standard for Teachers and Students is only $90 after rebates at Amazon is another option. Here are a couple links if you are not familiar with this product:

More Of what? MS Office is in a class of its own. I just wish that MS would make everything else as good as Office. And please dont tell me that is just as good when its not. I tried replicating my complex reports with the Open Office calculator and it could not be done because the calulator could handle the formulas I use in Excel.

yeah, I actually use all the logic and trig functions in excel as well as all the charts and stuff (engr. major). Guess I'll be using Office XP for Students

I got my copy of Office v.X for like $13 at the colelge bookstore.

Check with your University if you are a student, because those are DIRT cheap, and Legit.

I got my Office XP from school for something like $20 bux!!! And I got Visual Studio .NET for 5 bux a CD. (30 bux total.) And that I got as "faculty" 😀, because I worked for the University.

Are you serious, I just checked my college bookstore and it was like $150 for office XP

lowest price I can find is $127 at sams club www.samsclub.com or dell.com

They do make everything as good as Office.

Win 98 has issues with 512MB RAM unless you edit the registry, I has MS Office 2k crash when I had over1GB RAM installed.

They do try and make them all the same 😉
