absolute best 478 mobo?

Yea theres no question those were the best.

1) High Quality components
2) Good Overclocking
3) Pentium-M Dothan support with adapter

I was very happy with my Gigabyte 8IK1100( basicly same thing as the 8KNXP without some of the features).

Also as mentioned, Asus P4P800 and P4C800 were great boards, and support Dothan and Banias Pentium-M's with the CT-479 adaptor.

Abit IC7 was also a good board.

asus p4p800. though if you overclock, the p4p800 droops a bit. dont let that stop you, because i got my 2.4C up to 3.6Ghz...thats how stable that board is.

IT was but it was expensive. The IS7-G was a lot better in terms of price/value. Abit made the IS7 as fast as the IC7. Trust me, Abit killed Asus in the 478 round. Asus might have better boards today, but that's today.. 478 was yesterday

My Abit IS7 with a Northwood 3.0 GHz is running like a charm. Never had a problem and it is rock stable.

How's your chipset fan? Mine went crazy after like... barely more than a year. Replaced it with a Thermalright or something passive thingy. Open mobo surgery isn't my idea of fun, but aside from that, the Abit's been great. (My IS7 runs a Deleron for a Linux/MythTV "HTPC")

Mine started rattling and eventually seized. The system runs fine with the fan unplugged though.

There's only one issue with most of those MB's...

No matter how good they were "back in the day", he needs to be able to actually buy one now!

My original northbridge fan is still running. When it is winter and the system is cold, it sometimes makes some awful noise, but then it settles down. The last time I had the case open (about four months ago), I considered replacing the northbridge cooler but decided not to at the time. It hasn't made crazy noises since then, so I will delay replacing it until it starts making stange noises again.

I see a dozen or so on eBay alone. The FS/T forum here and other reputable hardware sites should have them as well. 😛
