Absinthe

I'm pretty sure it's still no. I bought some for a wedding gift a few years ago from France, it was marked as books on the import paperwork.

it was supposed to be one of the best Absinthe's....I thought it tasted like crap.

According to friends in Lafayette and New Orleans, yes if you know the right people at the right bars.

I tried it a little while back; was ok, but not something I would rush to have again. A local place makes a cocktail with some of it though and that was quite delicious so I would have one of those again, I would just never both to buy a bottle of it for home.

When I looked into it a while ago, it was illegal to SELL it in the US, but not illegal to own or buy it. You just have to get it imported. Check online. There are stores that sell it.

per us regulation it can't have any thujone so it wont be real absinthe.
What is "real absinthe"? If you're looking for something to make you hallucinate, then "real absinthe" won't fit the bill. If you're looking to poison yourself with an ingredient that offers no benefit to taste or effect, then you could hold out for thujone in your absinthe. But if all you're looking for is an intensely botanical liquor that tastes vaguely of equal parts ouzo and gin, there's a lot of absinthe out there that fits the bill. The best use for it is a sazerac and you don't need the "real" thujone absinthe to make a good one (and they are pretty damn delicious).

Drank a bottle of 120 proof stuff with a couple friends last year on a sat night who got it from Europe somewhere.

Tastes like black licorice which I hate and didnt have any effect other than being drunk. Im not a drinker but I was hoping for a different experience for some reason.

I was disappointed, especially as it was about $60 if i remember right.

No real Absinthe in the US. If you WANT to experience blotter acid, then DROP blotter acid. Don't risk your life on some random alcoholic beverage that may or may not have been "genuinely infused" with antifreeze, distilled rotten shrooms or who knows what the hell what. Just take a freaking few days off from work, drop a tab or two, check it out, then judge for yourself. And for God's sake, don't drive, use your cell phone or post here. K'thanx.

that's because absinthe tastes like crap.

I like NV Absinthe Verte, though from what I understand it's really tame as far as most Absinthes, with only 38% alcohol. I actually like the black licorice flavor of anise. I mix it with eggnog around this time of year.

A good absinthe is great; it's the best anise flavored liquor there is. You must have tried the horrible Czech shit.

actually, I have! 😀 And that is my primary experience.

Before that, though. when I was staying in Switzerland, I tried some absinthe offered by my host, which was made by one of his farmer buddies.

....it was far, far worse. D:

You could always get absinthe with thujone in it in the USA. I don't know why you would want it though. Thujone/Wormwood is nothing but a flavor additive, otherwise absinthe is just really strong liquor; there is nothing psychoactive about thujong in the levels contained in absinthe. In high concentrations thujone can cause seizures, but it doesn't cause anything else.

For what it's worth, here is the some of the top rated stuff.
