I've only had it one night.

It was mixed in a drink called a Crunch-F*ck, & it was very green :p

Not really sure what was in it, but i was pretty trashed after two of them :)

An article from Wired about a chemist in Louisiana that reverse-engineered absinthe based on an original sample. According to the article, real absinthe (like what this guy brews in France) actually does taste good... ROFLMAO... you DO NOT KNOW what you are talking about.

Have you actually tried real Absinthe? Do you know without a doubt that is generally tastes good enough that everyone would think it tastes good?

You can buy Absinth at any LCBO, go to the LCBO site (www.lcbo.com), it's just a ****** North American version that's allowed to be sold here and IS NOT distilled from wormwood (the halucinagen) there a couple kinds, you can buy various kinds ranging from $65 - $100 per bottle and ranging from 65% - 70% alcohol.

Quoting the LCBO Product Description for: HILL'S ABSINTH LIQUEUR

Light, very pale turquoise blue colour; aromas and flavours of anise/liquorice, cardamon, corriander and herbs; sweet and rich with a long spicy finish.

This is obviously what your friend had. All it is, is high alcohol liqueur.

it is illegal in the us because one of the ingredients is some root extract, and the amount is higher than what the FDA allows. It is quite strong, so heat that sugar cube and it improves the taste. i've bought some online and while it is subject to seizure by customs, you can usually sneak a bottle past the goalie so to speak. a friend and i were heating up our sugar cubes outside, and the police came up because they thought we were cooking heroin. haha. the hallucinigenic rumors aren't true, at least not in the brands i've tried. usually from germany.

Even at full 140 proof strength, why is it illegal here in the states when Bacardi 151 (151 proof) is readily available? I'm sure it's not purely based on alcohol content alone.

A friend of mine in college regularly imported bottles of absinthe (the stuff distilled from wormwood) from outside the US (usually from Asia I believe). He had two varieties: the strong stuff, which was greenish in color always, and the weaker which was redish. Both could make you hallucinate, just the weaker version required you to drink more.

That is no easy task. Absinthe is very disgusting. Think licorice, but twenty times worse (unless you really like licorice). Additionally, you're not supposed to take it in shot form. My friend always took a spoonful of sugar and caramalized it (held a lighter under the spoon) and then after a minute or so would stir into the Absinthe mixed with a little water. This made it's taste a little more bearable.

The strong stuff, we only needed two drinks before we were hallucinating good and proper. The weaker stuff was probably double that, maybe a little more.

Absinth is not a drug. It's liquor. Illegal in the USA and England, but semi-legal where I live.
Actually, absinthe is alcohol with wormwood and a few other psychotrophic plants. Wormwood contains thujone which in any quantity is illegal here and a few others places and illegal in any quantity worth while almost everywhere else.
Thujone is what makes absinthe absinthe, although it's psychotrophic properties are widely disputed. A lot of what makes absinthe such a potent drink is probably the proof.

As what I said earlier, there are very few real bottles of absinthe now, 99% of what is made commercially is just alcohol with a bunch of fennel flavoring and some green food coloring.
The way to get the real stuff is to find someone who bootlegs it, apparently that's pretty big over in Switzerland and the government doesn't do much to stop it.
I was lucky enough to know someone who made some with a still according to one of the original french recipes.
It was alright, I did feel slightly different from being drunk, but truth be told I rarely just took absinthe so my head was usually swirling with all sorts of nice things if you catch my drift. I felt it was quite overpriced at $65 a fifth, but apparently people were paying in upwards of $100 a bottle.

I have been drinking absinthe for a long time. I have a few bottles in my liquor cabinet. And I live in the US. I usually spend about $200 to have two bottles shipped from England. The absinthe I purchase is La Fee, which is considered among the best. It isn't as renowned as Un Emile 68 or Logans Fil, but it's great stuff.

Absinthe comes in many colors because not all absinthe is made with anis. Bohemian absinthe, also available from La Fee, is blue like Sapphire gin. La Fee's standard offering is a glowing-green product. Other outfits sell yellow, brown, red, and other colors from various makers depending on the herbs and extracts (and food colorings) used.

To the poster who said it was milky white on that TV show, that is normal and indicative of a good absinthe. That is what happens when you mix water into an anis-based absinthe because anis clouds up with mixed with water. This is called louching. An excellent absinthe is said to produce an excellent "louche" i.e. the proper milky-white hue results.

It is not "illegal" in the US due to alcohol content; it is solely because of a main ingredient, wormwood, which contains a semi-hallucinogenic compound known as thujon. Thujon has a similar chemical structure to THC, which as you all know is found in pot. The FDA has decided this is too unsafe for us (thank you FDA....) and so they've banned it. Meanwhile, fake absinthe is floating around liquor stores across the country, called "Absente". The key difference is that the Absente contains SOUTHERN wormwood which is thujon-free. Taste the Absente side-by-side with a quality real absinthe and you'll be immediately swayed to the good stuff.

Absinth was illegal in Switzerland not only because it was very popular, but also because it often had toxic methyl alcohol in it. The absinth of today doesn't contain methyl alcohol but it's not unusual for it to have 50% or more alcohol. Enjoy... ;)

They can give them light beer with green food coloring, tell them it's absinthe and then laugh their asses off when the losers marvel at how good it tastes and smooth it goes down. ROFLMAO, you DID NOT drink absinthe.

I was about to post the same thing. The stuff I had tasted like crap, all bitter from the wormwood. It's not THAT strong, though.

Hmmm... My buddy brought a bottle back from the Czech Republic recently that he said we should try next time we get together. I wonder if it's the real deal.

I've taken shots of absinthe before and I weigh about 145.

... and remember just because someone is small, doesn't mean they can't drink. ;)

Wired (I believe) had an article about 6 months ago about a chemical engineer in the states that became fascinated with absinthe and was using modern technology to determine the exact recipe that they used to use (the stuff that artists and authors used). It went into detail about what makes Absinthe Absinthe and what you might find out there these days. The article said that a properly made Absinthe is very hard to source in this day and age, and elaborated on Pernod and other related liquors.

I've always wanted to try the stuff myself, but I'm not going to drink any old bottle of green liquod and assume it's Absinthe...I want to try it for the supposed mindfvck experience, not to get drunk off of it.

Absinth is 75% alcohol so yeah it would probably only take a couple shots to get a small guy drunk...

I drink absentia, which is refined absith. Buy it from local liquor store...U dont shoot it, it is mixed with water and sugar and is sipped. It is 60% i believe.

It is green, but more of a dull green then the Eurotrip absith.

Tastes like toned back sambuca...
