ABS Aplus Black Pearl

I don't own one, but from experience with other similar cases -

1. Yes, that shroud goes over the heatsink. If you're using a stock heatsink. If not, just remove it.
2. I seriously think those are just vents. They had some extra space and decided to break up the monotony. Looks like you could mod a second PSU mount there though.

The shroud goes over the heatsink to direct cool air pulled in by the fan directly to the CPU cooler. It's adjustable through thumbscrews and easily removable. It won't work with most tower coolers like my TRUE, but will work with all blowdown type coolers

They are 80mm fan mounts. And ZA is on the right track, that is a removable panel that when removed can accommodate double size redundant PSUs

 props for tracking down the photos, that was actually quite helpful to see those. I hope it didn't take you too much time to wrestle up those links. Many thanks.

Quick follow-up question: So I take the fan that uses that shroud must push air into the case then if it was intended to work with stock HSF's that push air onto the heatsink. Is this correct?

I was assuming this fan, being at the rear of the case, pushed air out of the case. If this is not the case, and that particular fan is used to push air into the case, do you guys leave it in the orientation when you remove the shroud?

Since my Tuniq is going to be in-line with that fan I definitely don't want my tuniq fan pushing air against the airflow from that rear case-fan.

That fan is mounted from the factory as intake yes. Personally I left it intake and made all my fans intake, it has a huge ass mesh window for all the pos pressure exhaust. I have it blowing towards the front of the case blowing over my TRUE, which is fanless (and runs my OC fine, plenty cool. You could make it exhaust though, with the CPU fan blowing right towards it

Cool, sounds like it won't be a problem provided I just factor it into how I orient my Tuniq's airflow.

Yeah with that mesh side I wasn't sure if there was any reason to have exhaust fans for the mobo upper-half.

Just seems unnatural to have fans pushing air in from the back as well as the top, but there is no basis for my feeling this way so I'll just have to get over it.

My reason for using the top fans as intake instead of exhaust was my GPU setup. I have an accelero with two fans on it blowing down. If I had the fans on top which are only 3" above that, it would starve my GPU fan for air. So I made them intake so my GPU fans have plenty of fresh cool air to work with. It's working great for me, everything is running quite cool. Well except for my NB which is kind of warm, but that's because it's now the hot side of the heatpipe

Any Large PSU will be a tight fit. I have an Enermax Revolution 950 in my Lian Li V1100 and had to remove one of the HD cages to make it fit comfortably. If you don't want to remove a cage, you can use a PSU extender like this. I am using one in that Lian Li V1100

Nice case for a nice price!

My TPN-750 is 6" long, and theres 4" between it an the divider. It could accommodate an 8" PSU fine, though it would be tight. That means it would fit an enermax galaxy evo 1250w or a revolution 1050w

Plus I think that divider is screwed not riveted, to it could be removed

I didn't know they made those PSU extenders, very cool, thanks for linking that. Learned something new today

MY PSU is a CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX which if I had to guess going by memory (my case side is on at the moment) is somewhere around 5" long so I'm thinking I am good for now.

But when I upgrade my PSU, which will most likely be before I upgrade my case at this juncture, its good to know about those PSU extenders as I can see that being a headache saver bigtime.

Thanks again yh125d for coming in with the specifics. You should be an ABS forum rep for how much free sales support you are giving those guys here.

In as many years as I have been buying hardware this is probably the most buyer-informed I have felt about a purchase before it even arrives on my doorstep.

Heh, I tend to do that when I'm really satisfied with a product. I loved my Antec 300 so I recommended it to everyone doing a budget build. I loved my Xigmatek S1283 so I recommended it to everyone overclocking on a budget. I loved my accelero S1 so I recommended it to everyone who wanted a quiet but better GPU fan. I love my new TP-750 so I'm recommending it to everyone who wants a good quality modular PSU for a xfire/SLI rig. And I love my Black Pearl so I'm recommending it to everyone who wants a sophisticated, spacious aluminum case 😉

Any more questions, just ask

NP IDC, YW

Just want to warn you not to put too much on those 12v rails. If you will take a look here Jonny does 5 load tests in his PSU reviews. I was checking your PSU and for the most part it looks like you are in fair with the ripple but when you load up to and beyond 39A YMMV with your hardware so take precaution with that machine.

I've never really done a "case build" thread before...and I don't really intend for this to be one per se, but I did want to document some of the aspects of how I setup my rig in an ABS Black Pearl perchance the photos help folks see how some things can be done (and perhaps for them to see how they most definitely don't want to waste their time attempting).

First off if this violates any forum rules please bring it to my attention asap.

I am still in the process of setting up my Black Pearl, but I uploaded photos of what I have done so far.

Let me start by saying this is by far the absolute best case I have owned to date. Huge, spacious, light weight, easy to work in and on. Its simply awesome, regardless of price. The fact that I got it for $130 shipped just makes me feel great about the value.

Let's see...so we've got a massive PSU bay, a smidgen over 9.5" deep.

The HDD bay comes with a 120mm fan stock but I removed it and put in a Thermaltake A2029 which has higher top-end rpms in case I find myself needing to push a lot of air to keep the HDDs cool.

I added a second 120mm HDD bay fan, the screw holes were already pre-drilled in the barrier separating the HDD bay from the PSU bay, just to further increase ventilation.

BTW the barrier separating the HDD and PSU bays is fully removable, its just screwed in, not riveted.

Oh, in doing my homework before buying the case I read a newegg review where some guy went off on the DVD cover plates (there are two which you are supposed to keep in front of your DVDs) as not being easily removed without scratching up the black anodized surface. Fortunately that guy just didn't RTFM because they clearly let you know you have to maneuver the plates a certain way to remove them. Here is my version of those instructions.

Mobo power-switch cabling routing.

The wire length for the case speaker is too short if you want to route the speaker wire under your mobo while keeping the speaker itself in the provided mount. I unmounted mine so I could route the cable behind the mobo. I intend to remove that speaker mount and reattach it where the speaker is currently located (its just taped down for now).

The top of the case sports two 120mm fan mounts as well as two water ports for you water cooler folks.

Personal choice here, the case comes configured with a fan filter assembly in front of the intake fan leading to the HDD bay...but no fan filter for the fan that is blowing air towards your cpu's HSF. Now if I had to choose I'd rather have dust accumulate on my HDDs (easy to wipe clean) versus accumulating inside the fins of my tuniq HSF. The case is already slotted to seat the fan filter assembly from the HDD bay onto the outside of the case where the cpu case intake fan resides...so I relocated the filter fan assembly from the HDD bay to the cpu area on the outside of the case.

Flipping the case upside down so I could use gravity as an assistant while anchoring and zip-tying the front-panel USB/1394/Audio cables to the roof of the case, I pulled the mobo-headers of the cables thru the side of the 5.25" bay (what would be the absolute very top front corner of them) so I could then route the cables down the top-side seam of the case.

I was annoyed by the default location of the cable anchor ABS selected for holding the front-panel USB/1394/Audio cables so I removed it with the help of IPA, getting rid of the leftover adhesive residues took an extra pass with the IPA soak.

Cable routing for the mobo power to PSU was pretty straightforward, just used two anchors and zipties to keep the cables out of the airflow path coming from the HDD bay as best as possible.

That's all I got for now.

Mingyuh!

I like what you did with the HDD filter. Cool. The routing of the usb headers me likey too, hehe!

No two case configs are the same. I can't wait to get creative when I piece it together. I actually have a long way to go. I still need a PSU, HDD (thinking SSD possibly), vid card...

Lookin good so far IDC 🙂

Always glad to hear something I recommended makes the buyer happy 😉

It's simply an amazing deal at the $130 you got it for, the $90 I got it for, or the $100 + shipping its going for at newegg now. I didn't notice the mount for a second 120mm in the bottom, good catch. I also like how the front fan bracket is toollessly removable, as is the filter for it. ALSO good catch on the filter having slots for use on the back. I need to be more watchful for stuff like that! I bet you could find extras through either ABS or lian li

Oh yeah, you did right by me, did me a huge favor convincing me to go with this case. Just awesome. There are so so many little "features" like you are pointing out that just make me really value the case.

Update on the case build, finished her today.

Relocated the case speaker mount since the speaker cable was too short to be routed behind the mobo while remaining in the mount.

Oh, I think we may have an answer as to why these rather awesome rebadged lian cases are going for so little on newegg...checkout that QA date stamp (Jan 2008!) these things have been sitting in someones inventory for nearly 2yrs.

DVD drive cable routing all prettied up.

Spent some time thinking and planning this one, the front panel of the case has two molex plugs that need power, plus my Touch-2000 needed molex power as well, so I hooked them all up and I snaked the whole thing down inside the cavity formed between HDD fan shroud and the front case panel (but off to the side in the corner, well away from the HDD fan intake area itself) and pulled one molex connector out the very bottom corner for hookup to the power line that I ran along the very back-bottom seam of the case.

I think it turned out great, better than I expected really.

CPU-side: Final case layout photo with all the sides off.

Backside: Final case layout photo with all sides off.

Final case presentation with all sides attached.

Regarding the fan control that comes with the case, for those who don't know you get to hookup four fans to the controller but the controller controls them all in unison. Lower the fan speed on the controller panel and the fanspeed of all the fans hooked up to the panel are unilaterally lowered. It's not an issue for me, just wanted to mention it in case it helps anyone answer a question they were wondering.

All in all I am quite pleased with this case, it served my needs superbly, it was one of the easiest builds I've done because I had ample space and the quality of the case build is just stellar. It is a $300 case selling for $100 for some reason I can't fathom.

edit: Just had to add that after spending 3 days methodically wiring this thing up she fired up without a hitch on the first go, kind of a first for me. Usually I get something cross-wired or comes loose at some point during the build requiring me to open the case back up after a failed first-boot attempt. Not this time, plugged in the power and all my peripherals and she booted first time, no issue. Felt kinda nice for once. I credit the case being so spacious that I really could lay everything out nicely so no errors and nothing coming undone from crowding cables.

You have to give credit to a spacious case simply because they make things easier! I don't consider Mid-towers anymore.

What on earth do you need 3 optical drives for? I only use one usb optical drive i've had for years, lol 😉 I do think 140mm fans would of been a better fit - don't you think?; those 4 drive cages are huge! Love how you sleeved the SATA HDD cables. I think I might look for something like that next time i'm at Micro Center.

Case and presentation looks great! I think it's going to be a fun recycle build for me

My wife's side of the family buys my kids all the DVD's of whatever genre they are interested in at the time. My kids like dora, the great aunt's show up with 20 dora DVD's for them. My kids like Thomas the train, one day the great aunt's come to town for a visit and bring with them some 30 dvd's of thomas.

I hate having to deal with all that menu crap they program dvd's to force you to watch just so you can get to the damn menu and start the show the kids actually wanted to watch, so I rip dvd's just to remove the menu crap and then I reburn them with an auto-movie start so it can't be any more difficult than just put the disc in the player and it auto-plays.

When those rare occasions happen where 20 dvds show up I like to spend as little time dicking around with them as possible, so 3 dvd drives helps considerably.

Yeah my QC was from Feb 13 2008, they're not new cases. I daresay you did a better cable management job than I did! I might open mine up and take some pics this weekend
