I heard of some Win95 emulation program that comes with XP and that you could use this to play old games. This true? Is there any sites that I can go to, to check out XP?
 
i doubt it's going to work very well... xp is just win2k with a different gui. i suggest dualbooting 98/2k until you have no need for 98, then just wipe it and stick with 2k. eventually all games are going to be written for 2k.
 
Potz, Have you actually ever used XP, or are you going by screen shots or what others "know" about it? Anybody that has used XP would know that the statment "xp is just win2k with a different gui" is false. I think that we should all keep an open mind about XP util it is in the store. Then if it sucks we can trash it!🙂
 
Yup, the 2458 release is very nice (except few incompatibilities with certain software).

For those beta testers, which firewall software works with 2458?
 
I have yet to see any thing different between the two builds. The funny thing is I cant get media player to play a DVD in 2458 like I could in 2428. I do not remember if I have to have my decoder card installed or not. The other problem I had was getting a version of 3dfx tools to run so I could tweak my Voodoo4 card. I was able to use a combo of an older tools program with newer drivers and now the Voodoo4 works great. The DVD is the only thing stumping me right now.

I believe they tie your copy of XP to your hardware. So, it's not possible to put it on a second PC even one you own like your laptop. If some of your hardware changes you must contact MS for a new code which "activates" XP.
 
couldn't you get around all this by installing it and then using ghost or driveimage to save it. Then just install it using the images?
 
I am not sure if that would work. XP generates a key at every startup using idwlog.exe and sends out a log file to the net. They keep changing the activation files in each build, so who knows what the finale product will have. Even if the ghost method would work you would still have to register your computer with M$ to get it activated. There are ways around the activation so far, but who knows how the finale release will be?
 
You might be able to do an install of XP, use sysprep, and before it reboots make an image. Once you restore this image it boots up and asks you for a few things like admin password, comp. network name, etc. and I think it redetects hardware. It might work as long as you have sysprep load a bunch of hard drive contoller drivers in the *.inf file. If it doesn't load your controller I think it blue screens. But sysprep comes from microsoft and they probably have already thought about this. Also, you would have to come up with the initial install of the program......
 
I triple boot W98/W2K/WXP(beta2) and everything rocks. Had to fiddle with the XP idwlog.exe and registry, but all is good! 🙂

MS didn't include REGEDIT for nothing! Even to edit their own OS!
