About to upgrade - looking for advice

The system in my sig is what I have now. I got a 3DMark06 score of 1717. I have an nVidia 8800GTX on it's way - should be here any day now. When I get that, I'll try 3DMark06 again and expect something like 6000-7000 probably. I'm planning on buying the parts below very soon, and I think I'll get at least a score of 10,000.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor - Retail
Mobo: EVGA 122-CK-NF68-AR LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Memory: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400C4 - Retail
CPU Cooler: ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler - Retail

Any good links for OC-ing this hardware? Any other thoughts or advice?

Good work on the GTX. As I said in 2 other threads, E6400, cheaper memory, good powersupply (JonnyGuru), and what about Thermalright for your cpu cooler?

But the E6400 has 2MB shared L2 cache. The E6600 has 4MB. I think that's worth the extra cost even aside from the higher speed.

I have an Enermax 530w PSU w/ 2 PCI-e connectors. Is that enough?

I got this 8800GTX primarily because I wanted to output to 2 DVI monitors, and I figured I'd get the best card while I was at it. Someone told me that, when in SLI, you can only output to 2 monitors. Why is that? You have 4 DVI outputs but can only use 1 of them?

Look at the E6400 and E6600 in real world benchmarks, they are pretty close. The Enermax you have should be just fine (for a 1 card setup).

You CANNOT SLI AND output to 4 monitors. You can do one or the other.

The E6600 is a nice chip and worth the extra cash if you can afford it.

That Enermax 530 should be enough for 1 8800GTX but if you go SLI you will probably want something more powerful.

And on the output thing... when running SLI you are essentially combining the two cards to function as one so, of course, you will only have the output you would get from one card... just faster.

My mistake.....what I meant to say was that in SLI you CANNOT output to 2 monitors. That's what I was told. Is that true? That would mean that I have to physically switch monitors when I want to go from my 19" to my 37". I'm lazy.

Pretty sure you can SLI and have your desktop on two monitors. For games i'm not sure though 🙁

From nVidia.com:

"How many monitors are supported when running in SLI mode?

When in multi-GPU mode, SLI currently supports one monitor. When in single-GPU mode, users have the ability to use up to four monitors using NVIDIA® nView® multi-display technology and Windows XP Dualview."

I wish they could figure out a way to lock program focus with Nview. Having multiple monitors is a bummer when running a game fullscreen you can't touch anything in another monitor without the game minimizing. If you setup a voice program and server monitor in the other window they will still get updated though.

are you more worried about benchmark #'s or real world what you can see performance?

Real world of course - I'm just using the benchmarks as a guess as to real world performance.

imho, you could put in another 1GB of pc3200 in your current rig, o/c it and put in a 8800gtx. this would be excellent for gaming and many other tasks. i am assuming gaming since you refer to 3dmark benches.

i would say in a lot of current games you are definately gpu limited, but that can be fixed without putting out for a complete system. the 3200 is slower and single core, but it by no means a "slow" processor in terms of what is needed for games.

i think your current system is fine with the changes i suggest up above unless you need the additional cpu power for encoding of cpu intensive items.

if you want the new setup, i would go a 6400, a 965p bases board, some decent ddr2800 ram and possibly the cpu cooler.
