About to put in my two weeks' notice

This is my first time time doing this, so I have no idea what to expect. I work for a small company so anything could happen. Will they keep trying to change my mind? Will I get a hostile reaction? Heard stories of people getting fired on the spot.

Unless they have a set policy or don't trust you I doubt you will be fired on the spot. It really is just business, not personal. My experiences have generally been that once I explain why I am making the move they wish me well and give me a lunch on my last day.

Make sure you are professional and polite about it. Google for some tips on leaving a company. Some sites suggest to offer to help find a replacement if necessary. And as people always say, don't burn bridges. I think you'll be fine.

When you are giving your two weeks, make sure you are casually carrying around a weapon of some type. I prefer the baseball bat with nails sticking out of the sides. You might like a large knife, or even a gallon of gas in one hand and a matchbook in the other.

Good luck. Be professional, courteous, and don't burn bridges. That way even if your employer is a jerk about it, at least you will have the satisfaction of having taken the high ground and maintaining your character.

Varies by state, but varies from nothing at all to having a lawyer from the Corporate Legal watch you pack your things and walk you to the exit. Some companies are so paranoid (especially in the case of IT workers), that they would rather have you leave immediately with pay than risk keeping you around.

Just spoke with my boss. It went well, he wished me good luck asked me a few questions about new job. I guess I'll have to have a conversation with HR later on today or next week. But that shouldn't be too bad either.
