About to give up on SETI

As my caches dwindle down, and Berkley doesn't seem to care. I am ready to look for another project. RC5 is out, but what other projects are there that are dong some good? DC wise that is🙂 I need something that can cache the data and will upload and download when I have the chance to do it. SETI is too time consuming now, and I am not going around reconfiguring things anymore to try to fix their bandwidth problems. I have 8 P3866's cruching full time, and a few other machines I can bring to bear, including my new Athlon 1700.
 
Just because we haven't seen progress on the bandwidth issue doesn't mean that UB doesn't care. I bet there are guys working on finding a solution, but just aren't going to say anything until they know what it will be.

Besides...I didn't start this project for UB's sake. I remember reading about this project some time before it was ready to go online, and I signed up to be notified when it was ready. I have always been interested in the unknown, out there in space, and will continue to crunch as long as there is even a little hope of finding something in the great beyond.......as long as I have WU's, that is.

Even though things have gotten a little thin, I haven't run out of WU's yet, so until that happens, I don't see getting too upset.
 
Things are looking up this morning. I have been uploading completed units at about 6 an hour. That's a whole lot better than the last few days. 🙂

My queue is finally geting some relief!🙂🙂

Just an update. As of 4:30 EST I have sent up over half of my queue!🙂 I'm still have 30 to go.
 
Danstp - I'm afraid that there are few if any projects that are "trouble free". As long as one must rely on the network and on hardware/software, there will always be problems. This includes delays on stats updates (Dnet), inability to connect to a server to get new work (F@H), etc. Sound familiar? It's not just a SETI problem but a problem with the general falibility of the distributed computing model. 😉

I hope you will reconsider and weather the storms as it were - no matter what project they may hit. 🙂
 
I recommend Eccp. You'll do quite well with all those machines. Once you've got the client installed and your handle set up, just let it go, and upload the info whenever you want, its that simple.
 
Well i said this awhile back, but it didn't seem to go over to well with some,

Stop taking on new new people until the bandwidth problem is fixed... UCB came out with 3.03 for what, science or Bandwidth problems. i think most know the answer to that... Look at the last 24 hours on the Homepage, almost 1,300 new member's, tomorrow another 1,300, and so on, and so on. I think a Temperory stop to new sign-up's until a fix can be made will help, it's not fair, but it's not fair to us eather..............Wow i can't beleave i typed all that

I seriously doubt stopping new sign-ups would do any good. New recruits don't tend to hit the ground running with multiple machines and in fact, many never finish a single work unit. It is those of us that have been around awhile and have many multiple machines crunching that are sucking up the vast majority of the bandwidth.

I've never been able to understand why SETI kept everything bottlenecked so much at UCB campus instead of "spreading" the data around with "official" proxies. Keeps bandwidth bottle necks from being too much of a problem AND helps the network keep going when a single point of failure can no longer bring everything to a halt.

I think that you just hit the nail in the head with that idea. What about setting a TA proxie or a SetiQ for us? I mean more like OrangeKid SQ and the others (sorry but I don't remember the names), I'm willing to be one of them I have an spare pc that I use for learning Linux and it can be set up as SQ for the rest, I'm behind a firewall (1 hardware and 1 software) but the help of you guys I think that it can be done, and my connection is ADSL. I can download WUs at any time and keep them in the Q until someone needs them. Let me know what do you think.

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE, if we can hold together as a team, while the others disintegrate, we will be that much stronger once Berkeley resolves the problem. I'm relatively sure Berkeley will do something, there is a certain prestige associated with running the No. 1 DC project around. But it is a state institution and solutions sometimes take a while in a bureaucratic environment.
 
good point JimMc, you should make a new thread stating that.....we need to stick together where others wont
 
In answer to the origional question perhaps the Cancer DC project.

The reason I am possibly suggesting it is for the new people to SETI so they are not turned away cause of frustration. Then email SETI saying similar.

AND tell them you want SETI in 64 bit code for when the NEW AMD product hits the street cause then your going to need ever more bandwidth!!!

(Right now I'm saving for MORE POWER ... GO AMD!!!!!!!!!)
 

I am all for sticking together, but when you cant process due to others lack of foresight the whole group is kinda stuck🙁
