I'm just about to pull the trigger on a 58" Samsung PN58A550. It's on sale at the local store for $2600 Canadian (MSRP $3500). I had seriously considered the 50" Panasonic PZ800u in the past but went for the larger screen (both about the same price).

Anyway the question is should I purchase the in-store warranty or just stick with the 1yr manufacturers warranty? The in store warranty is 4 years and is pretty comprehensive (any manufacturing defect or any other problem that crops up in the 4 yrs is fully covered). Accessories (remote etc.. is also covered). Anything more than 3 stuck/dead pixels is covered. They would either repair or give you a new set. Usually the warranty is $540 but he said he could knock off 250 bucks.

Usually I NEVER go for extended warranties. They are almost 100% profit for the store (that's why they push them) as most problems usually crop up in the time of the manufacturers warranty. At least for computers if it doesn't break in the first 90 days or so (breaking in) it's unlikely to fail after that. But then my area is computers.

I don't have any experience with buying flat panel TVs. Should I purchase the extended warranty?

Also a final question please comment on the price, good deal you think?

Thanks!!

Final FINAL question, think I'll be happy with the upgrade from what I currently have? 50" Grand Wega LCD rear projection tv (about 5yr old)

Have you checked the power consumption on those? Don't leave it on if you're not watching it.

Anyway, the "4-year" store warranty only kicks in after the manufacturer warranty expires. So if it craps the bed in 6 months, you have to deal with the manufacturer. You are essentially buying 3 years of warranty.

I don't normally go for extended warranties, but for an expense this big it would give you peace of mind.

The specs from one site say 670W which is high definitely, won't be leaving it on when not watching it that's for sure but that's sort of what I was expecting.

As for the warranty yeah I normally don't go for these things but it's a big purchase and I'm not used to the technology. Would NEVER go for an extended warranty on a computer for example (then again I build my own). Just can't decide if I'm throwing my money away with it or not :(

I bought it with the warranty (piece of mind). There is a 30 day money back guarantee on the warranty too so I can change my mind latter.

Delivery is this Friday. Now to rent a Blu-Ray show show off this mother! :)

Hmm.. Somehow, I like the LN series versus the PN series. L being LCD and P being Plasma. Being that I had a Plasma before, the only complaint that I had was the burn in on the video games and idling DVD/Bluray title screens and such. Samsung and others said that they've eliminated that problem, but I think the LN series is better. IMHO

P.S. On the warranty part, unless you plan to move the TV around the house a lot, like a Walkman or Ipod, I wouldn't go for that. Spend the money instead on a good power surge or conditioner like an APC or Monster unit. Some companies, and I am not going to name names, seem to have a customer support policy of worming themselves out of fixing or replacing high end TV's under warranty.
