About to buy an MP3 Player

I much prefer the old-school look of many other players, far less obtrusive. But if she's the type to walk around in size 58 chartreuse pants with her "homies", the iPod may be perfect for her, in terms of looks..

i have the iRiver and its a better overall MP3 player
and i didnt want to carry around a white MP3 player

i love the iriver. i have the ihp-120 b/c my friends all had the ipod and i didn't want to buy into the hype. i read many reviews online and there was not one bad thing said about the iriver. to be honest, all the reviews for iriver have been better than the ones for ipod. i use it mainly as external storage, but the sound for mp3s is great. it also comes with voice recording, a remote control, protective cover, and FM radio. the only downside is the crappy headphones. do yourself a favor and upgrade to a better pair asap. although people may think that the ipod is smaller, they both weigh the same. i do think the ipod is smaller though, and it looks "cooler" . not that the iriver is ugly or anything...

Hm, I prefer the look of the iPod. Most mp3 players look pretty good, though. I just think the iPod looks a little cleaner. I like the brushed steel look of the zen a lot too.

Man have you got a chip on your shoulder. "Glaring" and "gaudy"? Have you ever seen an iPod? I'm beginning to wonder. By the way, my iPod and headphones are black and I never use the backlight.

To the OP: I strongly considered the iRiver before getting an iPod, but I knew I'd never use alot of the features like the FM tuner. I like the simplicity of the iPod. As many people have pointed out, both are very capable so I'm sure either would be a great gift.

you needto remember its a gift for your sister. whether you like it or not has no bearing on whether she likes it or not.

even though the iriver may be more capable, the ipod is more well liked by females all over the world.

And anyway, looks like the 4G ipods have much improved battery life and sound quality, so soon even those rants may be unfounded.

i have the iRiver IGP 100 and am very happy with it. It seems to be the only small mp3 player that is "drag and drop" No Hassels. I think its not being sold anymore tho...

Actually the chip seems to be on your shoulder, and in favor of the iPod. The only thing I've said which could be considered bashing it is when I commented on its looks - and I made sure to stipulate that it's merely opinion. My other comments which shed a bad light on it are statements of fact. When I say it has low sound quality, that's a fact, I'm not bashing it. When I say it has the lowest battery life of any DAP, same thing. When I say it doesn't support wma, ogg, or flac, same thing. When I say it forces you to use iTunes, same thing. Getting the idea yet?

Why? Having to take the player out of your pocket/bag to see what's going on is a pain in the ass. I can't wait for the day we have a HD based DAP with wireless headphones and a small wireless LCD remote. Throw the HD in your bag, clip the remote to your sleeve and put on the headphones...
