About time consoles caught up with PC's

Can't wait til the next generation.

I just hope the PS3 is as powerful. If these specs hold true or even close it might spell the end of computer games. I mean who wants to take an hour to install, download update and set up a game on a computer (BF 1942)? When consoles offer plug and play, now computer games won't even have an graphical advantage like they do now.

I know this is a computer forum so flame if you must.

I'm glad we're using a spec sheet that's not even real. I'm also glad that considering this hasn't even gone into development yet and that since it will take about 3 years to come out, 3.5Ghz won't be terribly fast any more.

Remember when the original Xbox was annouced to have a 700Mhz CPU and that seeemed ungodly high when it was first announced? I do.

The graphics industry has about 3 years to evolve before this gets out. I think they're going to be able to beat this one...

sorry, no console "control pad" will ever replace the control you get by using a keyboard & mouse in FPS gaming.

eh graphical advantage at a very high price for pcs. i mean look at games like ninja gaiden on xbox..amazing, and its years old now. i still remember peeps used to say xbox was just a pc and its games would be easily ported/hacked to pc's.

Dam ain't that the truth.

I wish someone would come out with a keyboard/mouse type setup for FPS games for X-Box. I cannot play any FPS games for X-Box because of the controller (same for PS2)

It just takes some time getting used to it. Where are you going to put the keyboard and mouse when you play? It's not like a PC where you're sitting at a desk.

You would think it should be a standard feature. This way the console makers can grab more of the computer FPS market share. However, there is the fact to consider that the people using controllers would get crushed by the mouse users. I can use both but I don't think its fair, the mouse is much much faster getting to a point on a screen.

the human interface of a console just isn't built with FPS gaming in mind. sure, you could "get used to it", but why would you want to when a superior interface exists?

I don't think consoles will ever be a replacement for computers when it comes to FPS gaming.

How about for strategy games too? Try playing Starcraft on a console?

I have been spending like $1000 a year for the last few years to keep my computer up to date.

I have always predicted that the graphic level of next gen system games will be so good that their visuals will not be outdated that fast because while computer graphics get better, to your perception, the quality will follow a logarithmic graph. I like playing computer games but I also play the Xbox plenty.

ps2 analogs make fps stupid. xbox analogs are workable at best. And no, consoles are not caught up to pc's. Catching up, MAYBE, but by the time the next line of consoles is out, the pc's will be a step ahead.

Keep in mind that they ALWAYS have the ability to make a console equal to a current pc, but it will NEVER happen. They take pc technology, and make it cheaper and packaged. Also, think of the time of development of software for the hardware, and the game design time as well. With pc's its rare that a game is designed or truly optimized for a specific video card or processer, which both helps and hurts.

Maybe you should just make better purchasing decisions instead of obviously wasting your money. I usually upgrade every 3 years or so, with nothing inbetween. I can't remember the last time I couldn't play a game that had just come out.

every time a new counsol is released they say it is going to kill the PC game market and it NEVER does

consoles can keep up with PCs since the code isn't dragged down by a huge operating system, tons of bloat for use across a broad swath of hardware, etc. the hardware on a console doesn't have to be as powerful to get the same results. especially later in a console's life when the programmers are comfortable with coding to the metal. you never get things coded to the metal in the PC world.

What is coding to the metal?

ya nowadays, if you want the best of the console world you need more than one console, and therefore you end up spending more than you would upgrading your pc anyway. the consolers' argument that consoles only require u to upgrade to the next console every 2 or 3 years is no longer valid because now you're doubling or tripling that price from owning two or three major consoles at a time. how many of you have a gamecube and a ps2 or xbox. i had two until just recently.

Who said consoles were a replacement for computers in terms of FPS gaming? I certainly never did.

While you're talking about a superior interface, KB+mouse is only superior for FPS. For other types of games, like racing, sports, and action/adventure games like Ninja Gaiden, I can't even begin to fathom trying to play that on a KB+mouse. Most console gamers are fine with the control pad. There's more to a FPS than just control. I'm sure that yes, there is a market for a KB+mouse combo for consoles. And I'm sure that yes, many people would buy it, but it's obviously not big enough of a market for any 1st or 3rd party manufacturer to come out with one. (W/ the notable exception of the now failed Dreamcast)

And like I said earlier, the logistics of how to play a console game with a KB+mouse combo is difficult to fathom - where are you going to put it when the majority of console games are played on the couch - that's probably one of the main reasons why one doesn't exist.

You can plug a control pad into a computer.

Try plugging a keyboard & mouse into a console.

That's just one extra piece of crap I'd have to buy for my computer. Don't get me started on price comparison boy! 🙂

But for all intents and purposes, each one has it's use

As far as the joystick vs mouse goes, with a little practice, you can be good with either control. You guys who make this argument act like the mouse can do a lot of things the joystick can't. Just because you suck with a joystick doesn't mean that it sucks and you have to bitch about it. It is the user, not the interface. Start practicing and you will eventually be come good at is. Sure a mouse lets you better pin point in a faster mannor but if you are fast on the joystick, you will be just as fast as the other players using the joystick.
