about The Bob Newhart show

Was Dr. Robert Hartley a psychiatrist or was he a psychologist?

I searched but found nearly equal references to either.

Thanks.

Definitely psychologist. That's been covered by Newhart himself in interviews. He demanded that the character be a psychologist to maintain a more lighthearted atmosphere in the sessions. A psychiatrist would tend to be more serious.

The Bob Newhart show or Newhart?

or are they one in the same?

In the Bob Newhart show he was a psychologist in Chicago. In Newhart he was an innkeeper in Vermont.

And yet the score in the poll stands 7-1 in favor of psychiatrist. That's why you're better off just inventing some random numbers instead of trying to do a poll on ATOT. The people voting generally don't have a clue. Much like the American political system.
