So a while ago somebody posted a topic about sending away for a free copy of the Quran. It sounded interesting to me, so I signed up, but I didn't think I'd ever actually get one. Many months have passed, and I had completely forgotten about it, when what do I see arrive at my doorstep but a heavy package from the "Council an American-Muslim Relations". I open it to find a massive text book. I didn't think the Quran was so long, but it turns out this copy has the English translation, the original Arabic, and the Arabic transliteration to the Roman alphabet. Anyway, I thought it was interesting, and I'll definitely take some time to gain some actual knowledege of the literal word of Allah. Did anyone else order and recieve one?

I'm not crazy. Of course I didn't order one. I don't want to end up on a NoFly list or have my phone wiretapped.
Really, I think you would need to pretty naive to think the Feds don't know you ordered that book and that you are now in a 'threat' category on some secret government lists.

Heh, I didn't even think of that. You're probably right, although my name might already be there... I think I've signed some MoveOn petitions sometime in the past.

Darn. I shouldn't have even responded to this thread. I will probably be audited by the IRS now.

Reading the Qur'an won't get you in trouble...heck they teach a course on it in every college and you can find lots of copies in many libraries. It's stuff about bombs and poisons that the Feds are after. The Qur'an itself is a 1400 year-old book that has nothing to do with promoting terrorism.

I would suggest not reading the Qur'an from front to back. The first Surah (chapter) is fine but the second one is long and mostly about laws and boring things. The surahs aren't arranged in chronological order so you might want to get a guide on the best way to read the Qur'an.

I found the differences between stories in the Qur'an and stories in the Bible pretty interesting. I did a report on an essay that compared the story of Joseph in each of them and it actually turned out to be a very interesting assignment.

Are there van(s) with blacked out windows parked around your house now? Not to worry, they are probably only the NSA, CIA, FBI or similar agency keeping their eye on you.

I'm nothing but deadwood.

Agreed.

I got my copy a month or so ago. Right before I went to China. Hmm...is that two strikes against me? And, yeah, that's a thick book!

Council an American-Muslim Relations? Sounds like a group aiding our enemy. Sorry but these are the same people excusing these terrorists. They always say "This act of terror was but ...". What is that "but" doing in there? These radical groups are pathetic and should be looked into for any terrorist activity.

Nice to see people here, who always seem to ridicule Christianity, all of a sudden reading the Quran. Very interesting. Join John Walker Lindh and others who originally planned Jihad against this nation but all of a sudden are on their knees begging for forgiveness.

By the way, why does a traitor like Lindh deserve less jail time?

I would appreciate it if you could point out where this group has said that... ""Today, American Muslims are sending a message against terrorism, while at the same time building bridges of understanding by distributing free Qurans to our fellow Americans," said CAIR-FL Executive Director Altaf Ali. "

There are groups that should be investigated and groups that should not. Learn to differentiate them and stop lumping all Muslims into one bucket.

Because he was railroaded into foregoing a trial?

Though CAIR has received public recognition and endorsement by prominent public figures, including President George W. Bush and Democrat Nancy Pelosi, high-ranking members of CAIR have taken stances that many critics say belie its self-portrayal as a moderate organization dedicated to civil rights for Muslims. Immediately after the September 11, 2001 attacks, President Bush included CAIR, which had endorsed his 2000 campaign, [4] in several public functions.

While the administration has since been reported to have renounced its ties with CAIR over the latter's alleged support for Hezbollah and Hamas [5], a number of mainstream politicans maintain friendly relations. In 2005, Governor Jeb Bush of Florida wrote to congratulate CAIR for its accomplishments on the occasion of its annual banquet. [6]
Interesting, eh?

Heh, I thought that was pretty funny. I don't expect to actually get much enlightenment out of the Quran anyway (as evidenced in my wording "the literal word of Allah"). What is written in the books is sort of irrelevant. What is relevant is what the majority of the so called followers believe. Very similar to Christianity. In fact, exactly the same as Christianity.

Ah yes, good old CAIR.

More info.

CAIR takes their message a little far in some cases but they're goal is good, Americans understand very little about Islam (and Judaism too, but thats a discussion for another time), CAIR attempts to fix some misconceptions although they have stuck their foot in their mouth many times, then again how many lobbying groups haven't?
